SUPPLEMENTARY ESTIMATES BROUGHT DOWN IN HOUSE OTTAWA—The total amount of the supplementary estimates brought down in the house, including the fif- * teen millions for the Canadian Northern railway and the eight million Grand Trunk Pacific loan, is $28,282,- 081, of which $25,165,098 is chargeable to consolidated fund, and $3,11G- 983 to capital account. ■ There is .>1,500,000 for -the restoration of the parliament buildings, ' $500,000 for a new National Transcontinental railway terminal elevator at "Winnipeg, $500,000 to rebuild the government elevator at St. John, which •was burnt two years ago. There is also $150,000 for the development and extension of Canadian trade. For Fraser River. The largest single item is $100,000 Tvhich is required to complete the Calgary drill hall. Of the votes for harbors and rivers, the largest single item is one of $200,000 for the: improvements on the Fraser river., The New Building. The government has decided to make the east block, which contains the offices of the Governor-General, Sir Robert Borden, Sir Thomas White, the privy council, the finance department, justice department, the..department of external affairs, more fireproof. No. ouilding in Ottawa contains so many valuable .papers. There is a vote for a new .fire-proof roof on the east block of parliament building to cost $2-10,000. The vote for harbour improvements, including Vancouver works, bring the otal up to $200,000. The amounts for public works are Comparatively small and are largely confined to repairs and improvements. As the official publication for the Architectural Institute of B.C., the B.C. Builders’ Exchange, and the Building and Construction Industries’ Exchange of B.C., the Record primarily covered news related to building, contracting, engineering, real estate, and industrial finance. The Record was published by the Record Publishing Company, which had previously published the paper under a number of different titles, including the Daily Building Record and the British Columbia Building Record. The Record subsequently evolved into the Journal of Commerce. |
