Under these 'Circura- . "stances a-downward price movement, if gradual and orderly, is to" be wel- ' corned both as an evidence of tl»e return of more orderly conditions and as a factor in accomplishing that rectum. Such a movement in the prices nof„basic commodities is now clearly - Jeviilent.' Sharp recent declines in^ a . 'iew commodities however, are likely to'cause the business public to lose ' isjght of the fact that in ,a number of ■other commodities a gradual, even if •Blight decline, has been.under way of 'Jate and bids fair to continue. Recent 'declines in . prices. or" such . commodities as shoes and clothing are not to be viewed as ^ isolated' instances but .rather as a part of a gradual and general c mo f em en t, the time at'which .each commodity responds and the degree to which it is affected being de- -Sennined by conditions in the national amd international market" for that 'Specific commodity. "Even at this time it is well to emphasize once more that the abnormal "price level has been .the result first, »f actual physical shortage of goods 3n Telatiqpi to demand, and second, of -the expansion In the volume of credit and the various forms of mones/. It w-*5 thus clear that a decline in prices • wui only be brought about by a'falling off of demand, an increase in the "physical'volume of production, 'a decrease ia the volume of credit and -money, or by these and various other ^causes' working together. "• The armistice automatically destroyed the 'specialized demand which the war had created and .removed the artificial support which had sustained th» buying power of Europe during the conflict. "It was not to be expected that the -Industrial community could maintain ithe high tension under which-it had -worked during the war years, and it is very' doubtful as to whether the rmaintenance ' of this tension would have been desirable. Despite numer- "ous and widespread, complaints'.as; to' the unsatisfactory condition of pro duction in Canada and the United 'States, the fact remains that since the recovery from the temporary hesitation following the armistice, both -•countries have increased materially their production in certain directions. "This year has been a struggle against great odds, economically, and while in, many instances it has been disap-' .pointing so far, it is nevertheless true; that production has been gradually SUing up the gap between supply and demand, not only in, Canada and the United States, but in practically every country in the world except those yet In a state of internal disorder. In the face of these -conditions, easil}' discernable to all far-seeing business, men, the unwisdom of further expansio'n became apparent some months ago. Efforts to prevent such expansion have resulted in a considerable .strain on credit and this has been much accentuated by "retarded transportation and consequent typing up of a large volume' of credit. At the" same time, the fact must not.be lost sight of that' the credit position of GETS CRUSHED ROCK CHEAP BURNABY— Municipal Engineer; Smith has submitted, to the Burnaby council some figures on the cost of crushed rock as supplied by the new municipal rock crusher. The cost of rock put through the crusher and delivered on the job costs on an average of $3.12 per cubic yard .while that similarly delivered by outside firms costs $3.75 per cubic yard. Engineer Smith pointed out that while the rock supplied by outside firms is of slightly superior quality to that secured for the municipal crusher, he considered that the difference was more than compensated for by having the money spent in Burnaby by local workmen. ■J.;P. Flanagan's new sawmill in the Latimer road/will begin cutting and residents of this district are looking forward to the inauguration of this new local industry as providing an; ample supply of lumber for building purposes at a saving that will reprgsant previous high transportation ^charged anyway. An electric powerjine is now being built out from the town to supply the new mill, which will be operated by electric power instead of steam, tfhich was the original intention. The change from steam to electric power was materially influenced by the fact that drilling operations failed to locate a good supply of water at"The mill." .Another new power line is being built along the Hall's Prairie road, north of the„Latimer road. This will serve a considerable -number ofresi-. dents 'there for both lighting facilities and also power for small dairy plants and similar industries.
