Shipyards had to be built before* production of ships on a large scale required! could be begun. Both these fields required construction work on a colossal scale. The cantonments are good sized cities, up to date in every particular, with water and sewer systems, lighting, telephones and miles of paved streets and sidewalks. All these all over the country had to be provided, ready for use, in a few weeks' time. The contractors of the United States stepped - into thejbreach-and accomplished a wonderful-work, a work that will make the name of the contracting profession rank high in the honor roll of those who ao 1 complished something in-this battle'-for j freedom.- - y A. - .', .* 1 ' The" American'Bulletin says: "If was a tremendous test for the contractors of the country, yet thev met it so effectually that the cantonments were practically all, ready on schedule." Interest continues in the chrome .-deposits near Cascade, and considerable development is projected. The use of powdered coal to replace fuel oil is the subject of experiment in British Columbia at the present time. 9 The Providence, near Greenwood, has slapped six cars of ore since it opened last fall—most of them secona grade. It is now using electric power. Dr. Victor Talmadge, of the geological survey, Ottawa, is in Vancouver en route to Island pointy where he will investigate reported occurrences of ore bearing mercury. At least $150,000 will be spent on the development of the Fiddler group of mineral claims situated near Dor- een, in the Skeena mining division, northern British Columbia, a considerable proportion of which will be expended this year. The most promising deposit of mercury in British Columbia is at Hardy Mountain, near Kamloops Lake, where an English company" installed <a plant some twenty years ago and extracted 7,000 pounds of mercury. These deposits are on the west side of Copper Creek. One of the outstanding features of the mining industry around Princeton is the recent discovery of rich deposits of ' strontianite by Station Agen,t Mickel of the Great Northern and Kettle Valley Railway. This mineral,^ said to be scarce at present;; is ,used chiefly in,'the manufacture of .red"'sig7 nal lights and in obtaining' sugar from molasses. The great demand' for ■ red signal lights at the front has been mainly responsible for its scarcity. can foe used in a hundred ways in INDUSTRIAL and CONSTRUCTION work of all kinds Consult our New Business Manager about adapting gas to your needs VANCOUVER GAS COMPANY Carrall and Hasting; Sts. Pearson, head of the Little Giant Motor Truck Company, Vancou/ ver Branch, in obtaining a new stenographer. As a last resort he ordered a want ad. in one of the local newspapers. The advertisement inserted follows: "Wanted — First-class, high-class stenographer; salary no object; this stenographer must get it as fast as I can talk, and get it right; must be absolutely accurate; must have human intelligence; if you are not a cracker- jack, don't bother us. "I note your requirements, as aired in the newspaper, and hasten to make enquiry as to this strenuous business that takes such*, an extraordinary sten-* ographer. Your advertisement appeals to me strongly—stronger than prepared mustard, as I have searched Europe, Airope'and Irope and the States x in quest of some one who could use my talents to the best advantage.
