It is proposed to make the new school an S-room frame structure with a stone foundation which will cost in the neighborhood of $20,000. The finances for the projected building will be available by utilizing the unexpended balance of the $66,000 school transfer bylaw which, was authorized by the ratepayers at the annual civic elections last January. No plans for the projected school building have yet been prepared, and this will probably be the first thing called for if the full board adopts the recommendation of. the building committee. With the passing of the trying, unsettled war-time years and the return of peace, there is now little excuse for" a man not owning his own home. The great.Victory Loans which have been so heartily supported by the people of Canada have instilled into the Canadian people lessons of thrift,, that will endure through the coming days of peace. Every, man can and should own his own home. There is no appeal'from the nian who seeks a position that is treated so lightly by private, and public employer alike as the appeal which for the first eight miles south of Vernon, towards Kelowna. and the second eight have been placed with Col. Somewhere in the heart of every man is "the desire to be independent. Independence is the measure of one's standing in the community. The first step along the road to .independence is to own one's own home. The man who owns, his own home is invariably the respected and trusted-man in every community. One of the largest employers of labor in Canada ordered a canvass of his factories and employees to determine what percentage''of them owned their own homes. At the same.time *ue urged .all employees in the establishment to become home owners or home buyers. Sound logic prompted this action. The responsible man is the valuable employee. The home owner has a-gpdeeper sense of civic pride. He is established; he is responsible; he is interested Jn everything that tends toward the peace and security and upbuilding of the community. The example set by one manufacturer is sure to. be followed by others. In fact, it is already being followed in a practical way by several big eastern concerns who are aiding their employees in a substantial manner to own their own homes., It will daily become more requisite to a man's securing responsible employment that 3. After discussing the best surfacing for the highway, the council decided to only consider the oil macadam and j asphalt, as it was desired to have the 'work of a permanent character. It was decided a.so to go ahead with the 'preliminary, work of grading, laying of rock and a. decision will be made later as to the best medium of surfacing after the council ascertains how much financial assistance will be forthcoming from the provincial government. ■ Y; '. . This will enable the Royal city's housing committee to provide for a considerable number of moderate-priced dwellings, and further applications wilL be received with this aim in view. As homesites for these soldier homes, the city has been for some time negotiating with the provincial government for the purchase of a tract owned by the government and located between Tenth avenue, Eight avenue and Sixth street. The government is aaK- ing- from $250 to $260 per acre for the tract, which the city considers too high, especially as an alternative to this tract as homesites, the city has selected about two dozen lots in various; sections of the city, which are valued at from $75 to $310, according to their location and size. These will probably be utilized unless the government consents to a. material reduction in the price quoted for the tract.
