The public which pays the bills 'the economists who calculate how .large those bills ought■ to"be;"and the -"manufacturer, wholesaler, other mid- dlemen and the retailers who make ■mit the bills, have been engaged lately in "heated discussions as to whether •prices had • really' begun to recede. -Arguments on both sides of the question have been .supported by many facts. Those-who held that prices had passed their peak pointed to the fact tnat .stores which had engaged in re- .c-ent cut price sales had stated that 'Jack of buying on the part'of the pub- .'lic had forced tliem to lower prices in forder to move stocks; that the public, in.other words, had ceased buying •until prices receded to more moderate levels. Those who urged that prices must remain high pointed to the still, ex- fstant shortage in supply of essentials, .and predicted that. any recessions ■fiom high prices must be temporary •antil supply has definitely "overtaken uSemand. In the meantime a number -of leading eastern mercantile weeklies -which are generally regarded as authoritative on such matters, and one .in particular, 'Current Affairs", a Boston mercantile weekly, which, deals -specially with the shoe and leather market, makes a definite prediction as to the future trend in the price of •shoes. In its last issue "Current Af- Jairs" says: S^'lfrnky be taken for granted, how- 'ever, that the retailers cannot disjpose, ■of high grade goods for next season at prices exceeding $15 to $18. In other -words, the $20 shoe Jias, vanished from the horizon. General opinion throughout the- trade appears to be that the peak of leather and footwear prices lias definitely been reached, and that rfrom now on there will be at least a -gradual decline. In other words, it looks as if everyone, from the hide ■ Healer to shoe retailer, would have tu -adjust himself to the new conditions arising from the refusal of consumers to huy any.more footwear until they find where they are 'getting off." Were it not for the insistent demand tor more housing accommodation, the ■same state of affairs would prevail in •regard to the building ^supply and --material situation.« But even at that, many leading contractors and dealers are of the opinion that when building slacks off in the fall and stocks begin to accumulate, the same condition of affairs will prevail In the building -trade as is now manifesting itself In the clothing and boot and shoe markets. effort will, be made to have the new round-house completed in ten weeks. The - round-house will be a five-stall' one, built of brick and concrete'and will cost about $50,000. l -v Robertson & Partners announce that they are open to receive tenders on the plumbing and painting of the buildings. The*machine shop which is^ part of the contract, will also be of' brick and concrete. Mr. D. O. Lewis, resident engineer of the C. N. R., wili supervise - the construction. When this new round-house and machine» shop have been completed on the site just north of the Point Ellis bridge, the company's terminal'area will'take on the appearance of a fully equipped railway yards, for freight sheds were built some time ago. 27735—Fraser Valley nlrie.s Ltd., 405 Sth Ave, \V.—General Truck. 27736—Fraser Valley Dairies Ltd., '105 Sth Ave. XV.—General Truck. 27737—T. Saivus of this'city has been'awarded the contract for the grading of a 2%' "mile section of the Kettle Valley branch line railway from South Penticton to the liead of Dog Lake. Work is to be commenced by the contractor at once and is expected to be finished ■ in about sixty days. Steel laying by the railway company's construction gang is to follow the completion of the' grading as rapidly as possible. Contractor Saivus expects to make fast time on the grading, contract as the route is through a fairly open and level country covered only by small brush. Tenders are now being, received by the Kettle Valley Railway Company .for a new wharf at the head of Dog Lake. It is also understood ihat the Kettle Valley company intends to award a contract later on' in the summer for the construction of another section of 16 miles of line extending from Okanagan Falls down"to" the new townsite near the'canteen.*k PENTICTON PERMITS SHOW MUCH ACTIVITY PENTICTON—Major Dufresne, city engineer and- building-inspector, has submitted a report to the city council showing that the total value of the building permits for the first half .of the current year has come very close to the hundred thousand mark. The actual total was $97,451," or about $2,500 greater than Kelowna's record for the same period,, thereby settling for the time being the keen rivalry between these two interior towns. A' particularly pleasing point about these building figures to Penticton residents is the fact that out of 69 permits issued during the last three months, 36 were for new residences, which aggregated in value $37,863. & Co., Contr. 2863—L.
