The funds for  the. erection of the home are assured,  but aid is sought In  the purchase or  acquisition of -tho site.  VANCOUVER—The annual report  of Eire Chief Carlisle shows that the  property damage from fire in the city  during 1916 was the smallest recorded  since .1911, being '$9S,000. less than the  loss for 1915, and over $100,000 less  than the loss sustained during the  years 1912-13-14 respectively. The  number of fires where damage resulted last year was given as 192, as compared with 224 the previous year.  Total loss on buildings and contents  was "$511,172, and the total insuranpe  paid on those losses was .$429,870, the  total value of all property involved being $4,021,614, and the total amount  of insurance carried on buildings and  contents $2,425,950, Included in these  figures were losses on boats and marine properties which, in themselves,  amounted  to $63,100. 'Chilliwack     gets     $33,300;  Delta,    $22,500;    Dewdney,    ?6S,500,    and  Richmond   $10,000.    Eighty   thousand   is  revoted for Kingsway through the Muni-  '      - cipality   of -Burnaby.    Point   Grey   gets  > $10;000   for   roads,   and   N'icomen   Island  the same amount for dyking; $13,500 is a  subsidy for the Ladner-Woodward ferry.  The   vote   of   $100,000   on   last   year's  estimates for the Second Narrows bridge  is left off.    For bridges generally  $150,-  C00   is   set   down,   while   for   the   bridge  over the Fraser River at Prince  George  there will  be an appropriation  of  $150,-  •00.  An item in the Land Department appropriations is that for $20,000 for  "timber testing and investigation of  wood products." An indication that the  government intends to continue seeking  overseas markets for the B. C. lumber  trade is that another $50,000 is appropriated for salaries, travelling expenses,  ' and purchase of material. '  Other Appropriations.
