COST OF MATERIALS WILL CONTINUE HIGH Local contractors. and builders are inclined to agree with material deal-> era that there will be; no advantage to prospective builders in postponing operations in the hope of reduced prices. Advices from other coast -cities as well as from eastern^ points indicate that _.this opinion is general throughout• the country. Replies to a questionnaire sent out by the Dominion department of labor to the leading manufacturers of building materials indicate heavy underproduction in air these lines, as' a result of the war and the labor situation. It is the consensus of opinion among these interests that'prices for all building materials will continue at a high level and may even go to still -higher levels. There is a very heavy demand, indicated for all" commodities used in construction work and it is expectedlthe amount of building activity this year will be limited only "by the ability Qf the material manu Plate, Sheet, Figured, Wired,Art,Prism, Colored, etc. Wholesale and Retail W. MOLT - 426—436 Dufferm St. Fairmont 123b Bevelling and Silvering year. The sales manager of a big cement corporation and the head of a large concern manufacturing building machinery declared the situation as far as costs we're concerned rested with the labor unions, with transportation and coal supply problems being also possible vital factors in determining whether costs will increase or remain stationery, throughout the year. ', SHOWS THREEFOLD INCREASE Although there has been no particu: larly large buildings included in the list of permits applied for so far this month, the total value of the building permits issued by the civic building inspector's department for the first' 17 days of January shows more than a threefold increase on the same period-last year. The-aggregate value of permits up to January 17 is $167,- 355, while for the first 17 days of January, 1919, it was only $52,000. This certainly looks promising for.a building boom this summer. WEST 612 'PENDER ST. WEST "The Gosd Fi«l Restasraits" NEW HOSPITAL TO COST C $350,000 IS NEEDED At the first meeting of the new civic health committee on Monday, Dr. F. T. /Underhill, city medical health officer^ submitted an outline; of what was urgently needed in tlie way of accommodation' for the handling and care of infectious diseases other than small pox and tuberculosis. 'Accommodation for. other infectious diseases was sadly lacking at the outbreak of war and have been growing more acute ever since, and there 'was ho other course open to the city now, he maintained, than to build a proper hospital building with accommodation for at least 700 beds and capable !of J having wards isolated from each other. Such a building, which was a real necessity right now, would cost at least $350,000 and provision for its 'erection should be made as soon as possible the M-. H. O. declared. f The committee-will take action on Dr. Underbill's recommendation^ at the next meeting of the health Committee. ' . \- . i (OamttaaaA from paara 1> to erect their factories with shiplap finish instead of corrugated iron during the war years while that material was so scarce, should be asked to redeem their promise now and use sheet metal covering for their buildings. He made the recommendation with a view to reducing the fire risk on the island. The three firms in question, he stated, were the Vulcan Iron Works, the Wallace Shipyards shops and the Schaake machine shops. A special committee consisting of Aldermen Ramsay, Owen, McRae and Crone will take this question up with the harbor board and also other matters connected with better fire protection and prevention on the island. PREPAliRlNG PLANS FOR KNITTING PLANT Fred. L. Townley and Robt. M. Matheson, Associate architects, 325 Homer Street are prepairing plans for a one storey brick addition 50xS0 feet, to the Vancouver Knitting Company's plant on Dufferin street. Selected tenders will be asked for by the architects as soon as the plans are completed. HOW TO LOWER Delivery Costs from January 2 to 17, he only had 17% hours to devote to the work of his department ^outside of the housing scheme. . The aldermen agreed that Inspector Bird should have more time to look after building matters generally, and a special committee consisting of Aldermen McRae, Owen and Rogers will investigate the affairs of the department and report what arrangements or additional assistance is required at ■ the next meeting of the council. -It is probable that some competent architect will be required to take over the supervision and carrying but of the erection of homes for returned men in the city. ' The president of a terra cotta company known from coast to coast, predicted that prices .would advance for clay products before the year was over% His firm found the demand already greater than the supply and wq- producing only about 50 to 60 per cent. of what they produced in norma' ■years. He predicted the present upward trend in general costs in blinding materials would, continue until there is greater production. The secretary of one of the leading quarryman's associations also had the same condition of under-production to report, due to inefficient labor and a curtailment of working hours. As far as limestone, sandstone and similar materials were concerned he considered the peak of high prices had about been reached now. A more optimistic reply was received from the president of one of the largest sheet and tube ■companies, who looked for slightly lowered costs before the end of the MOLSON'S ■BANK-TO ■.... ."
