construction,    such    as    dry    rot    in j
beams, joists, floors, etc., also forms of j
construction  which   constitute  a seri-j
ous fire hazard by reason of additional j
construction   in   too   close   proximity i
to  chimneys    and  flues.      There  are!
scores  of  these  minor  defects  which {
if not taken in time lead  to disaster.
Undoubtedly    a  great  many     lives
have been saved and serious accidents
averted    by    thoughtful    contractors
bringing to the attention of the civic
building   department   defects   in   construction discovered when repairs are
being    made.      There    were    several
striking  instances   of  this   last   year,,
according  to  City  Building  Inspector
R.     A.   McKenzie.       Several   parapet
walls  on  such   busy  streets  as  Hast-,
ings and Granville, which were a men-;
ace   to   the   public,   were   luckily   dis-j
covered  in  time  by contractors while
making    minor    repairs,    and    either!
strengthened or removed.    The build-;
ing     inspector    also     expresses     Ills}
thanks    to   jobbers    who    discovered''
weaknesses   while   making   minor   re-!
