There has never been any doubt of the tact that the coming summer would witness a great revival of building in the west, with the practical assurance of Vancouver leading the whole of "western Canada in that ■ respect, but xecent statistical advices from tlie east show unmistakably that building activity on a great scale is to be general in all the principal towns and cities throughout the continent. Even under the handicaps of an unusually severe eastern, winter, the total volume of new Ayork' for January, as reported by a New York authority, was $325,000,000. This repre: sents a gain of $50,000,000 over December and just about double that sum over November of last year. These figures, in themselves are decidedly significant. Another unfailing indication of much building activity all over the country is the strong demand for capital with . "which to further building enterprises. While for the present, dwelling house construction is being given most attention in order to meet the pressing demand of the house shortage, it is also already plainly evident that office building construction will not be neglected. But the really significant feature of the year's effort promises to be the attention paid to other lines, especially industrial, construction. New industries are springing up every day, many of them requiring special forms of construction. All this means increased industrial activity and greater production—something both Canada and the United States is urgently in need of after the saturnalia of war and munition work has been cut off. And increased production is the only satisfactory cure for the present unsatisfactory financial tangle the world is in through the exchange situation. About the only unfortunate phase of the situation is the limited amount of building material, available, even here in western Canada as well as throughout the Pacific Northwest, "which was being looked to by almost the rest of the continent to supply some of the chief essentials in build ing material, such as lumber, lath and Mining activity in the Windermere district is very., widespread, according to old standards, and the amount of■ development done in the past year should show up in the shipping returns.. After a dozen.years of idleness the Ptarmigan, which was operated in the !90s is now being worked by W. S. Watson, under a lease and bond and since January 1, has twice shipped to Trail, being credited with 87 tons of ore. Mr. Watson is getting his immediate ore for shipment from the old dump made in the days when silver was low, and that section of the Horse Thief creek locality is busy with, men and horses. The Lead Queen and the Isaac both on Francis creek, are being operated by Paul Denhart. Paradise, Trojan and Bald Eagle properties are also operating. $2,500 FOR ROAD REPAIRS NORTH VANCOUVER The North Vancouver district council decided at its meeting Wednesday night to appropriate $2500 for. much needed repairs to the Indian River road. Tenders for the work will be called shortly. A number of other urgently needed road J improvements in various places in the district were recommended by the engineer, but action on these was deferred until the next meeting to^ascertain financial arrangements in the mean time. while they are about-it, .the council
considers it might as well get a good
sum and has accordingly asked, the
government for $100,000. It is understood the funds are available and that
the goA'ernment is inclined to look favorably on the application. If granted,
it will enable Point Grey": to carry out
