During the year just past the population of all our cities has increased considerably, which, together -with .tremendous business expansion and the large building deficit which has existed on the Canadian side since 1914 and on the American side since 1917, has created very heavy building* requirements throughout the country. 'J "Though the ensuing year will witness great activity in the building industry, this will not be commensurate with thev heavy demand, as the labor situation has not yet become stabilized and production for some time will necessarily be far below demand. Not only is there a shortage of labor directly engaged in construction work, but the stocks of building materials are also low. 'Some manufacl;ii«irs believe that the cost of labor inmost building lines has reached its peak, and for this reason there will be little or no further increases in the cost of building materials. On the other hand, •many manufacturers state that the present upward trend in general costs will continue as long as labor is scarce and business good. This rule, they admit, may be considerably varied by local conditions as far as labor is concerned." COUNCIL SETS DATE OF COURT OF REVISION The new city council, after taking office on Monday, formally fixed the date of the annual Court of Revision when appeals against the assessment will be held. The date was set for Thursday, February 26, commencing at W) a.m., when the mayor and council will sit to hear any complaints of too high a valuation placed on realty or improvements by Assessment Commissioner Painter. There Is, however, no probability of there being so many appeals against the assessment as were received two years ago, when some 400 were lodged, and another couple of hundred sent In their protest too late to be legally considered. ftofrertson.Power'& Devey Engineers and Constructors Inspections Dosigm Reports Construction Industrial Plants, Dulltiinsa and Equipment Wharves unci Pieru, Power l'innla Industrial Railways Concrete, Steel and Timber Structures 502 Yorknhlre Building Seymour 9217 TELEPHONE DATA jTHW nRAXAATXOM JAN. 2, 1920 Crone. Prior to 1915 the mileage of the country had steadily Increased, although the rate of the increase has been diminished for some years, especially since 1910. Since 1916, statistics show, the mileage abandoned has been substantially greater than the new mileage built. Another rise of 15 per cent, in paper went into effect January 1st. Thus does the life of the printer man become correspondingly shortened.
