WHILE AWAITING THE FIRE BOAT , That much discussed fire boat, or rather fire boats, for at least two are needed, for the proper protection of Vancouver's. double waterfront seems about as far off as ever, despite the numerous spasmodic attempts to accomplish something in j that line'"in recent years. It begins to look as if some other and j temporary steps may have to be) taken to provide better fire protection for the waterfront, especially along Burrard Inlet, until such time as something is actually done to provide a fire boat.' In this connection it is pointed out I loc&ted along the wharves "'&nd by a prominent city official who is interested in fire protection for the vaterfront, that for the entire dis- Adkison & Dill GENERAL CONTRACTORS Specialists In Reinforced Concrete 325 Bow. St. Sly. 3768 B-..B28R tance along the Burrard Inlet row of -wharves there is no water main or lire hvdrant located north of the C. P. R. tracks. This means that' in the event of a waterfront fire, such rxz occurred at the Canadian Fisheries warehouse a couple of years ago, the operation of any trains would interfere with the supply of water from the mains, through lines of hose, for fighting the fire. This is a very serious defect and one that should be remedied without, any delay. It is hardly possible to | concieve of a serious outbreak of fire anywhere along the waterfront there without the equally serious need for locomotives passing along the tracks to perhaps rescue endangered freight cars and move supplies of an inflamable nature, such as tank cars of oil. Such operation would necessarily mean a delay until a channel could be cut under the tracks for the passage of the hose and delays insuch cases often (mean, many thousands of dollars in j damages. What is urgently and immediately needed along that waterfront is an extension of the city's watermains down to the wharves across several leading roads, and extensions made to an ample number of hydrants in proxirnity to the big warehouses, industries and storage sheds. -'Nothing J smaller than 12-inch mains should installed would not only give an immediate measure of relief, but could also be used later to supplement the efforts of a fire boat in fighting a waterfront fire. MINING Several of the largest copper-producing plants in British Columbia are understood to have dropped most of, their exploratory and other non-pressing work..-for the present, awaiting a setting-down of the copper situation. In the world's markets there is now on hand a stock of 3,00,0,000,- ' 000 pounds of copper, produced for a 2G-cent market. Until this is absorbed, conditions in the copper market are bound to be unsettled. The Anaconda Company's mines in Montana have reduced output recently by 25 or more per cent. According to R. Dalby Mori-ill, secretary-treasurer of the New Hazel- ton Gold-Cobalt Mines Limited the development work at the mines is progressing satisfactorily and conservative tests of two carloads of ore. sent to different plants for refining, have been highly encouraging. A. carload of thirty tons of ore ship, ped recently to the government plant at Ottawa has assayed 1.40 per cent, molybdenite, 1.8 molybclic oxide, 1.5-1 cobalt, S.90 arsenic, and of gold 1.48 ounces, making a total of something in excess of. ? 105 per ton. f}UNHf_M ■Cheating service Endorsed by leading architects, used in fine installations eve r y- where because it does give heating satisfaction. ELECTRICAL SUPPLIES | "BIO" Arc Light Carbon* 601 Pender St. W., Vancouver Let us quote you on your requirements 100% Service. Make a note of this: The Paint & Drug Reporter Says: "There is a gradual improvement in the general demand noted in most linesf:of the paint industry. Building business is beginning to be resumed in many sections of the country, and there is a manifest disposition on the part of many—largely industries—to do needed repainting. It is true that there has been as lowed movement in the re-adjustment to conditions of peace than many in the trade had expected, but this is perfectly natural. The consumer, to a certain extent, looked upon the existing high prices as a direct result of the fighting abroad, and was disposed to believe that there should be a reduction as soon as the fighting ceased. In fact, it is now realized that it is very difficult indeed to bring about any price reductions in many lines, and even in.those lines in which prices are sure to come down there has been no opportunity to hurry along the charges-which must occur. The new factory is now practically completed as far as construction is concerned, and some of the machinery of the plant is now being installed There is considerable more machinery on the way and it is expected the plant will commence by March 15. ChieT product of the plant will be Asphalt Ready Roofing, in rolls, and these will be either supplied for the market or else the firm will''put on the roof itself under a guarantee and maintain the roof in first-class shape under the guarantee for any term of years. The asphalt com.pounds from which this patent roofing is made, it will surprise many in the ■ building trade to know, are secured in British Columbia largely, and entirely on the Pacific coast. The asphalt compounds are all made in Vancouver and are refined from California crude oils. Being thus able to secure its raw material close at hand, the firm will be in a condition to compete with any industry of its kind in the country. Its market is practically unlimited, as in addition to the entire--western Canada, Mr. White has already, made arrangements for representation in Australia, New Zealand and the Orient. . FACT vs. FANCY PAINT AND PROMISES SELL MANY A MOTOR TRUCK; but PERFORMANCE, rather than APPEARANCE, is what counts in the wear and tear of the daily grind. Paint soon fails to cover up defective construction, and promises have never yet PAID a single repair bill. LITTLE G3ANT iVSOTOR TRUCKS are built not for looks but for service—not merely to JUSTIFY but to SURPASS our claims. ; LITTLE GIANT TRUCKS are sold in every case where superiority i* tested point by point in comparison with other trucks. The fact that 72% of LITTLE GIANT sales last year were re-sales to satisfied customers is the final proof. Don't take our Avord for it—ask LITTLE GIANT owners about the dependability, economy and efficiency of LITTLE GIANT TRUCKS. INSIST UPON RECORDS OF PERFORMANCE, NOT PROMISES OF PERFECTION. t. "We guarantee 50% lower operating cost than any other Truck on the market. We vaporize the fuel and Thermo syphon steam into the cylinders. Your service work on LITTLE GIANT TRUCKS is done every month at night at no Cost to you. Seymour 284-1-2845 * LESLIE W. PEARSON, Manager. Granville at Pacific II ■i.fi """_-_ii*__*_-
