CITIZENS SPEND MORE HOUSING NEW AUTOS THAN ON NEW HOUSES It is a somewhat peculair fact that' tor the first month of the current year Vancouver residents spent nearly twenty-five per cent, more . on the erection of garages to house newly purchased automobiles than on the building of new dwellings, "and .this despite the fact that there is a housing shortage in the city which is constantly growing more acute. The figures for January, as compiled from the books of the city building inspector's department, show that during the first month of the year there were issued 35 permits for garages which aggregated $79,817 -in value while the 24 house permits taken out during that period only •involved a total expenditure of. $65,230. That can not by any stretch of the imagination, be construed as an indication that strong efforts are being made here to meet the housing: shortage. Still, on the face" of the preference shown garages, it must be admitted that an analysis of the garage figures show that a big proportion of the I total expenditure for garages is involved in the construction of seven large combined public garages and service stations which absorbed $73,- 800. of the total of the $79,817 expended on garages. The remaining $6,017 was made up of 28 small garages, gen- . erally in the rear of residential lots to house the family flivver. It is still more significant of the phenomenal growth and use of the . motor car by all classes, that dtiring Jast December and November the proportion spent on the construction of garages and residences, respectively, •was about seventy-fiye and twenty-five, the former figure'being, that spent on garages. Of course, these months were not favorable ones for residence construction while the building or rather the throwing together of a small outbuilding to house an auto can be done on fine days or dodging showers. Back of all this activity in garage construction however, especially the small garage at the rear of a residence, is the desire of many car own- . crs to get their garage built before i tlie contemplated amendr.Vents in the civic garage bylaw are passed and put Into force by tlie city council. It was intimated some time ago by both City liuilding Inspector Bird and Fire Chief Carlisle that these small outbuildings ■ware being built too promiscously and "were creating an undesirable and in .some cases really dangerous lire risk. HASTINGS EAST LINE TO BE EXTENDED SOON As another striking evidence of improved business conditions and the< steady growth of local street car travel, it is announced by Assistant General Manager W. G. Murrin of the B. C. Electric Railway Comj.any, that the company will . shortly extend the double-tracking on the Hastings street I east line from the present end of the | double-track system .at Renfrew St., to the end of the line at Boundary! road. Following its usual policy, it is probable that the company will'build the line by day labor. Good Eats The Good Fioi Restaurants THE FOUNDATION CO.; OF B.C. NEW YORK BUILDING MATERIAL MARKET UP NEW YORK—There are some price changes current in the building material .market, according to the Dow Service Daily Building Reports. Window glass discounts have shrunk another point. There is an increase in the price of expanded metal lath, probably reflecting the dearth of wood lath, and official listings are made in the current price bulletin of the new prices of hollow tile which have been in effect nominally in this market for some time. These new quotations will cover this fire-proofing material until April 30th, when, if conditions warrant it, reaction may occur.
