The new concentrator is to be erected at the Bowena Copper Company's mines on Bowen Island, for Mr. YV. Tipping, who has leased the mine from the Bowena Company and Intends to operate it. The concentrator is to be of 100 tons daily capacity, and the chief feature of it is the fact that tbe ore concentrates are to be handled by the medium of salt water flotation instead of by the oil process, as has been used hitherto. It is claimed for ; the new process, after exhaustive ! tests, that salt water, besides being | more economical, foams better than 'oil in the process and thereby aids i in better recovery of the concentrates. I T. A. Walsh &- Co. are to erect the i concentrator and turn it over com iplete to Mr. Tipping, ready to operate j The machinery of the plant will ar rive next month from the east. M. Standifer Construction Corporation in Portland Thursday to stop work on five 9,500-ton steel vessels now under construction for the government. It is expected that work will be ordered continued on some of the vessels when the amount of material on hand is reported. Contracts for seven more steel ships to be built at San Francisco have been cancelled by the U. S. shipping board. I This makes 13 ship contracts rescinded in the paast two days. ,,' j The total contract price of the thir- i teen vessels was approximately $27,- ; 000,000. The Moore Shipbuilding Com- : pany hold contracts for seven and the Union Iron Works for six of the ships, j This action brings the total loss of j steel ship contracts in California yards during the last few weeks to forty- [nine vessels, with the total value of [try tthe contracts placed at $77,000,000. more put this coast on a nearly equal footing with rival ports in the east. Several weeks ago the shipping board announced a rate of £20 per ton on freight from Atlantic ports to the Orient, which was much lower than that from Pacific; coast. ports. With rates, from Seattle at $2o and $30 per ton, /competition with the east was out of the question on account of the high transcontinental freight rates. A committee representing, the lines operating vessels out of Pacific ports to tlie Orient has practically decided to quote a rate of $15 per ton, it is understood, and the action of the shipping board may bring about a further cut. Mild f spring-like weather has made it extremely difficult for merchants to get rid 6_ heavy winter and fall merchandise. Sales of such are very slow and made only at sacrifices. Sorting orders are slow and orders for fall are few. In dry goods, orders from travelers are reported coming'in well. The long looked for decline in the high cost of living is beginning to show itself, all lines of meats and eggs having ^declined, but lijbttet l remains_Jrirm.:w«_)5&U§§fil.e-. grocery Jiouses have reduced molasses and rice, and there has been a decline in the price of winter-wheat flour. Iron and steel industries are busy on government orders and have refused some large orders for, European account. Landlords report a big demand for houses, apartments and flats, and all have advanced rentals, owing to increased taxation and high cost of repairs. Retail trade has been busy and collections are good. - WINNIPEG- trade continues rather quiet, Wholesale and retail dealers and the public alike buying only for immediate requirements. Paint soon fails to cover up defective construction, and promises have never yet PAID a single repair bill. LITTLE GIANT -VICTOR TRUCKS are built not for looks but for service—not merely to JUSTIFY but to SURPASS our claims. LITTLE GIANT TRUCKS are sold in every case where superiority <s tested point by point in comparison with other trucks. ; The fact that 72% of LITTLE GIANT sales last year were re-sales to satisfied customers is the final proof. Don't take our word for it—ask LITTLE GIANT owners about the dependability, economy and efficiency of LITTLE GIANT TRUCKS. INSIST UPON RECORDS OF PERFORMANCE, NOT PROMISES OF PERFECTION. IVe guarantee ;">0% lower operating cost than any other Truck on the market. We vaporize the fuel and Thermo syphon steam into the cylinders. Your service work on at no Cost to you.
