WEST WEST Good Eats " The Good Food Restaurants" POPULATION STATISTICS AND ~. CITY'S GROWING PAINS With. the recent tentative organization of a "250,000 for Vancouver in 1925" club, population predictions are again in order. That is looking a considerable way ahead in time and considerably further in population, even for such, an ultra-optimist as Mayor Gale, but even at that stranger things have happened than for a city with such great industrial and commercial prospects before it as Vancouver has, to double its population within five years. Particularly does it come within the range, of possibilities when it is considered that the coming five years are sure to include the greatest period of reconstruction and industrial expansion that the world has ever "known. ..If Vancouver has increased her population by 15,000 in the first, year of peace, and that with conditions generally so unsettled and before an}- definite policy of industrial expansion has been drafted or even commenced, it is still within the bounds of possibility that the city may increase at the rate of 25,000 a year for the ensuing five years. Old timers still remember the. sarcastic but tolerant smiles with which the formation of a Hundred-Thousand club was greeted in 190n when the city had only approximately 60,000, but it is one of the bright spots in Vancouver's history that long, before the end of 1910. the city had attained and exceeded six-figure population so that the original booster club's figures were generally referred to with a derisive smile. Few among this city's well wishers', however, would care to see it grow beyond its ability to quickly assimilate or reach the proportions of a quarter-million city, or before certain vastly heeded improvements have been realized. The fact has long been apparent to many that some time in advance of reaching-this quarter-million population mark, the city must take steps to clear its business streets of the dangerous congestion -which robs them of their complete useful- PLACE BIG ROOFING ORDER OTTAWA—The board of commerce has completed arrangements with the French government for the placing of a huge order for asbestos roofing material with'Canadian firms. The order will aggregate fully ?1,250,000 for roofing material to be used in reconstruction in Northern France. B, C. E. R. FUND.HELPS 40 OF STAFF TO BUILD HOMES Full advantage has been/taken*' by the B. C: Electric Office Employees' Association of the $75,000 fund which was placed at their disposal by the company last April, and as a result some forty of the employees have built new homes, aided either wholly or in part by the fund. Payments are being made of the sums borrowed: at about the same rate as rent for a period of twelve years and then the home becomes the property of the borrower.. '■"•'''■;•.'. ■ ''v ■ So successful has this practical effort to cope with the housing shortage of the city been that other large1 business firms are now considering the adoption of a somewhat similar scheme. One feature of the B. C. E. R. home building plan that has greatly increased the scope of the original $75,000 loan is that repayments on the loans are being used by the manage ment committee in charge of the fund to finance further loans, so that there is now- building to the extent of about $S3,000 financed by the original $75,000 Now that-France has resumed trade with Germany,' she is about to try Caillaux for high treason because he traded with Germany when it wasn't being done in the best circles. After allowing the regulations re.- garding the distance which all bill-, boards shall be placed back from the, street line, to remain in abeyance dur-j ing the past five war years,' would it not be a good move towards the "city beautiful" if the city council strictly enforced these regulations now? (Continued from pagre 1> self in a couple of years The plant will have a capacity of 25 tons in the' refrigerator part of the warehouse and is intended to cope with the anticipated big increase in the strawberry acreage this year. The Berry Growers' Association also plan to erect their own new box factory soon so as to be in a position to turn out their own crates. It is probable that both the storage warehouse as well as the box factory will be erected by day labor on a cost plus basis. , The erection, of fruit storage warehouses promises to be "an active feature of the building trade throughout the interior this year. At Kelowna a fruit company has already arranged to erect a big warehouse to cost §30,000, the plans for which are. now being prepared by Architects Twizell, Birds & Twizell of this city. The Kettle Valley Railway has also been asked by Penticton fruit growers to double the present capacity of its fruit warehouse at Penticton in anticipation of the greatly increased crop in that locality this year. ?.4,500.
