BUILDING IS GAINING STEADILY IN VOLUME Locally as well as throughout Canada and the United States generally, the amount' of building^ construction -under way continues to gain in volume despite many deterrent circumstances and the handicap of the highest costs the* trade has ever known. In Vancouver and vicinity it would fBurprise some eastern. contractors, .whose activity has so far been confined largely to figuring and ordering in preparation for commencing work next month, to see the progress that has already been made on some fairly large building jobs that have either been under way all winter or else were commenced during the last couple of months. Vancouver is supposed to have very wet winters, yet for the past two weeks of unbroken dry spell, there has been full advantage taken of this favorable weather by contractors in pouring concrete for foundations and rushing other outside construction work which eastern contractors and builders are practically prohibited from touching for at least a month yet. This will air tend to make the ultimate aggregate of building work completed here in the year much greater than in any eastern Canadian or American cities of the same size. In a comprehensive review of the building situation generally throughout the country, S. W. Strauss, a New York building statistician, says: "Actual building operations throughout the country'have shown a marked gain since the beginning of the year. The total for January will show approximately 1325,000,000 or a gain of $50,000,000 over. December and an increase of about $100,000,000 over November. There are many indications that these gains in the volume of new construction will continue and that, unless conditions undergo a radical change, the approaching spring, will witness an unprecedented amount of building work throughout Canada and the "United States. "The , demand for accommodations of all descriptions is stronger than it has been at any time in the past, due to the long period of underproduction in the industry and the country's growth in population and business. The labor situation is more stabilized now than it has been for several months. While supplies of building materials are limited at present, improved labor conditions are expected to greatly stimulate production 1n these lines and make it more readily possible for builders to proceed with their work" VICTORIA SHIP YARDS WILL BE DISMANTLED VICTORIA—The Foundation Company will at once proceed to dismantle | its two shipyards and big assembly plant, as the, New York office has refused the offer made for the local plants by Capt. Argon, who has been negotiating here for some time, according to a statement made by Mr. J. E. McCormick, secretary-treasurer of the Foundation Company of B. C. He added that buildings and equipment would be removed, and the company would make way as quickly as possible for any others who wish to use the site. No 1 - HO CORDOVA ST. It was suggested that the new school should be built at Cloverdale instead of Surrey Centre. The ,new school at Elgin will consist of two rooms and will cost about ?3,000. There will be an Additional room for the Springdale school costing approximately $1500, and another room added to the Johnston road school for the same amount. It is also proposed to add two rooms to the White Rock school, these costing about $5,000.> ASK TENDERS FOR PIPE SAANICH; V.
