It is planned to use the lower floor for a roller rink while the upper floor would be fitted for dancing or public hall purposes. Plans of the proposed, structure, as prepared by Architect H. S. ■Griffith, were laid before the board. Doubts were expressed by the park commissioners as to whether the proposed structure could be erected for $150,000 and it was also feared that the building would tend to shut out too much view of the bay. The proposal was laid over for further consideration of the terms upon which the promoters are willing to dispose of the building at the end of a five or ten-year term of exclusive lease. ESTABLISHED IN 1886 Ground rioor "Winch Biasr. 739 Hastings St. W. Vancouver MOW TO LOWER Delivery Costs THEY COST ONLY SHOULD AVOID SLUMS IN BUILDING UP CITV Confident and well-rounded predictions have been made by those in a good position to estimate future developments that the next two or three years- will ..see some really remarkable development in certain residential districts in Vancouver; and vicinity. There are already-enough industries' of a permanent nature in' sight to warrant a marked increase in the population and that increase of residents will have" to '■■ be housed somewhere. That much being certain, it is a possibility that should be anticipated and steps taken to avoid anything like slum conditions in any closely populated residential district. It is obviously a much easier operation to prevent bad conditions than it is. to remedy them, .after they have become established. One of the first developments in this respect—it is hinted by prominent builders and real estate dealers—will have to be closely watched and guarded against is the Kitsilano and lower Fairview districts. These v.orkmen will naturally seek to establish homes fairly convenient to the factories on Industrial Island, and out Kitsilano way promises to be the direction which the majority of them will go. In fact, the movement in that direction has been developing for nearly a year now and promises to assume considerable larger comparative proportions during the coming year, owing to the marked increase that is expected through industrial development on Industrial Island and along the south shore of False Creek during the coming twelve months.
