As for private "building work it will probably pass the highest building record the west has even known. It remains yet to be actually proven that high prices do actually stifle construction. The year 1919 be'ganWith what were considered prohibitiy.e'wartime price levels.. It ended with the levels of last January wholly eclipsed and made as diminutive as the levels "of the first couple of war time years when there was an absolute stagnation on all buildings except such structures as were necessary for war purposes. Last year began with the governments of both Canada and the United States officially urging the people of both countries to proceed with their building plans. It ended with the public-minded citizens ol both countries showing every indication that they were ready and anxious to build homes, factories, office buildings, hotels, theatres and all the other structures that enter into modern community life, but hampered by being unable to obtain materials in the « quantity desired although the prices aslced are higher than the building industry has ever known them to be. moval will help materially to cope with the caterpillar plague ' which promises to be serious this year. The city council has referred the question of an early start on the clearing of the brush to the city engineer's department which after conferring with the city's legal department, will prepare a list of the vacant lots needing clearing of brush and notify the owners. If the owners do not undertake the brushing within 30 days of notification, the city will do the work and charge the cost against the property. , It is probable that later on after it has been ascertained how many lots there are to clear, the city may call for tenders for the work.
