AT OWL DRUG STORE Messrs Dixon & Murray, 1065 Duns- | muir St., have been awarded the contract fer the installation of a mezzanine floor at the Owl Drug store branch at the corner of Hastings and Abbott streets. Work is to be commenced on the improvements there at I once which will cost in the neighbor- f hood of $1000. The mezzanine floor! is intended to be used as refreshment,' dispensing quarters. ; involved in securing this increased] 100m will be somewhat expensive and j include among other things the re-j moval of the old vault that was installed half a dozen years ago with j the expectation that it would be large enough to fill requirements in that respect for fully a decade anyway. e Architect James A. Benzie has been engaged for some time on the plans and specifications for the necessary j improvements. The plans, however, j although well advanced, are not yet j at the stage in which tenders can be! called. There are some minor details j yet to be completed and approved, j and when these have been passedj upon and the plans are ready for bids, due notice will be given in the columns of the Record. City Industrial i Commissioner Davison stated that the j noted purity of Vancouver's water sup- i ply combined with the industrial ad- | vantages which she had to offer had induced a prominent eastern manufacturer of aerated wa'.vs to come here and establish a big factory for the manufacture of that line of bever-j ages. Commissioner Davison said; that he had been in communication j with this particular manufacturer fori nearly a year now. and after the man i in question had paid a visit to the city recently and satisfied himself of the | openings which it afforded, tie had i It is The present space occupied by the bank will be extended clear back to the lane between Hastings and Pen- : der streets, instead of terminating J about half way back as at present. I The old vault, at present located j about the middle of the building, will | be removed and a new vault, double '' the capacity of the present one, will ; be built at the southwest corner of j the premises and will be of reinforced concrete construction and ' will em-j brace the very latest improvements' and devices to make it absolutely fire proof. In keeping with the present high standard of the interior finish in the' hank's premises, the extensions will; also be finished in marble for the; counters with mahogany partitions and j handsome grill work. In the absence of a Canadian Bureau of Standards, it is no discredit to the insurance companies that they require the protection given them by these orricuL OBCtAN. laboratories, as they have learned by The British Columbia Kecord Is the ,. J _ . official or"-an of The ■Architectural Insti- experience that certain factors of fire and in simplifying business transactions, and the ultimate benefit that would be derived by manufacturers, property owners and insurance companies certainly justifies the establishment of such a bureau in Canada. that encouragement was obtained but that particulars will not be available until the matter can be further considered by the government officials. tute of British Columbia, federated with The Roval Architectural Institute of Canada, 'and The ' Engineeriiifi: A. Technical Institute of British Columbia, and as such is used by them as the medium through which to make their oflicial announcements to the genera! public By such selection the British Columbia Record Is no wise pledged to editorial support of any policy advance* by those societies, but maintains an absolutely independent position on all matters subject to editorial opinion. , OFFICIAL LABORATORY NEEDED Canada, unlike Great Britain and America, has no recognized, standards of fire 'resistance for materials that enter into the construction and protection of, buildings. In most cases, architects, property owners and municipal officers are forced to rely for this information on the Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., Chicago, the only other alternative being to accept the statements of salesmen as to the suitability of their material for the purpose intended. This state of affairs undoubtedly works a hardship to local , trade interests and on'Canadian, production in general, as under these conditions owners of property must specify the standards adopted by the insurance companies and put; in the material and equipment tested-to the Adkison & Dill GENERAL CONTRACTORS Specialists In Reinforced Concrete *25 Riwe St. Scy.376t--Wl28B Baynes & Horie General Contractors US lm Si SifMv 1181 Edward Cox General Contractor Cabins* Making , Fixtures Si,mw 1163 735 WartM St Davies Construction Co. safety are 'required of all appliances, devices and materials having a bearing on fire hazards. Undoubtedly without these safeguards the fire waste in Canada would have been far in excess of even its present high rate. The most logical solution of this difficulty' lies in the establishment of a government testing laboratory with experts and equipment to do the work, j And in order that their requirements may be universally recognized, they should work in close co-operation with the British Bureau of Standards and the Underwriters Laboratories in America, in this way avoiding the unnecessary expense, duplication «f work and diversified opinions which would result if operated upon an entirely independent basis. . It must always be remembered that the constructional features in buildings are so similar that without adequate protection a building will burn just as quickly in Vancouver, as in Chicago, so that there can be no rea- J son for changing from the standards of protection adopted by similar organizations after long trial and experience to determine their service value. International action in this control would prove a powerful factor in improving , the standards of protection MINING An addition ^is being made to the concentrator in Trail for machinery and equipment for the magnetic separator. For the first time in many months the ore receipts at the Trail smelter for the month of January will run well over 30,000 tons. Oscar Lachmund, formerly manager of Canada Copper Corporation, who has been retained by the citizens of Greenwood to devise some method of maintaining operations at the plant, has returned from Victoria, where he went, in company with a Greenwood delegation to seek support of the provincial government. The distinctively new feature of the week is the apparent livening up of interest in what might be called raw materials), this more especially at large eastern centres, where dyestuffs. drugs, sole leather, raw wool at government sales, and hardwoods show more inquiry. Oh the pacific coast, however, lumber is more active, fir prices having advanced. At some large western and southern centers inquiry for building materials, based on expected large spring operations, is more in evidence. Seymour 8551 -WT, J FhoueUlSejrmour 1878.
