KILLING THE GOOSE THAT LAYS ILuck is a disease for which hard work is the only remedy. Luck longs for a dinner, while labor goes out and earns one. Luck goes barefoot, while work never lacks for a pair of shoes. • Luck takes a nap, while brains and hard work are winning prizes. Luck needs a P before it to^make it worth anything.—Exchange. >£•> THE GOLDEN EGGS It Is becoming more plainly evident erery" day that publfc-.patience.is becoming wearied of hearing of high price talk followed by successive price boosts. It is fast getting out of humor with the causes that, almost weekly, exact higher payment to satisfy its building bill,,and that the public generally and the building part of the community in particular is today looking to find means or other 6t earlyf, relief is hardly to be wondered at. "To a B. C. Record representative, the head of a well known building firm told a story which' is interesting because it throws a revealing and. illuminating sidelight on one of the causes operating to,fatten the public'^ huilding bill. He said: "1 ,was informed yesterday without preface or apology by the local representative of a large manufacturer, that hereafter I would,, have to pay an increased price for their product,', be- • cause this firm had voluntarily decided to increase the wages of its ex- 'r pert workmen from.50 cents to $1.00 a day. This was rrfne, he said, to forestall the loss of even a single, experienced workman to a competitor—a chance which the firm said it couldn't •"-•afford to take. The extra dollar in '''-■^air^r'J.^f course, .as the firm's repre- . the bu ffdf/iijjr*"&£'*i\ "—;:." ./« ■ ib« raxed to the public had to stand the""r/se. //-• protested against the unfairness of this imposition because I wanted to protect my clients, but T wars power-' less to prevent it. I have half a dozen different residence jobs under way and I simply had to submit. This, the material firm, of course, understood in advance." Not only,is this a bad moral but it suggests an oblique business judgment, that is difficult to reconcile with, the great need of co-operation in the building field. Moreover, if persisted in as (iweuin a policy, 4t will not take long to kill jen the goose and smash the golden egg. Ar * FOR THOSE WHO DEPEND ON MAKING EXTENSIVE ALTERATIONS TO PLANT Mission.—The King-Beach Manufacturing Company are carrying on extensive alterations at their plant here. The new building will be the largest yet erected and will practically double the storage and working room, while a new boiler house will add to the capacity and convenience. SITUATION IN THE NAIL TRADE PITTSBURG—Current sales of wire and wire products in Pittsburg indicate that the bulk of the nail trade is on a 4.50 basis. This is at least the experience of the trade in the Pittsburg district. The nominal price of 3.25 on nails by leading producers, or 3.50 by independent producers are largely figurative of their conservatism, as the only available stocks are on the higher basis. Plain wire, which is quoted at 3.20 cents, is really selling around 3.50 cents by the producers that have any to sell. Wire rods, "which are quoted nominally at $52, have sold this week at $63 a ton. Better than this has been offered, and $67 was paid last week for this material. * EXTENSION OF TIME The date for submitting tenders for the erection of the Agassiz-Rosedale Ferry Landings has, been extended by the Public Works Department to 5 p.m. on the 2nd day of January, 1920 NORTHWEST LIME CO. BOND An objection that applies with equal force to other small building jobs in the city was outlined to the city council at its meeting oh" Monday in a letter from City Building Inspector A. J. Bird. He stated that great difficulty was being experienced now in obtaining suitable parties to tender for dwellings being erected under the .provisions of the Better Housing Scheme. The limited'number wiiC^ave secured contracts are now unable to take on more work owing to their inability to put up security of 10 per cent. -It was stated that two or three of these building contractors will have deposits amounting to nearl $800 to ?1000, and they complained of having- so much cash lying idle which they could use to advantage. Inspector Bird stated that it had been found that the bigger firms will not tender for these small houses and a number of contractors also refuse to '•^wdof ""de*- the present conditions. which, to obtain figures, and this field is now almost closed owing to tne reasons outlined.
