The complete bridge repairs will cost between $19,000 and $20,000, and as soon as the formal approval for these are given by the North Vancouver district council—which is expected to be done early next week—the work will be commenced. The cost'of the ..permanent repairs ' will he shared equally by the West and Ts'orth Vancouver district councils. C.— (Special)-—Two money by-laws' aggregating $35,000 for much-needed new schools, are to be submitted to the ratepayers at the coming municipal elections, according to a decision of the school board at its recent mooting. One of these bylaws is for $25,000 to provide a new high school which will probably be erected near Richmond, while the other by-law is for $10,000 to.provide for an addition of four rooms to the existing school at Steveston. The number of students in these schools has increased very rapidly since the war, and more accommodation is urgently needed now. The need for additional class rooms has become so'pressing that recently the manual training and domestic science classes have had to be given up simply for want of room. T.G. McBRIDE & CO. This shows somewhat of a drop from the same month. last year when the building total amounted to $16,995,200. It is also a considerable decrease from the total for October, .which amounted to $18,169,- 500.- } On. the year, however, there has been, as expected, a large increase over last year, for the total value of all buildings commenced ia - the Dominion for , thie past eleven months' of^l920 _amounts, to $246,859,- 000 is compared with $181,131,900 during the corresponding months 1919, and* only $94,562,400 .1918. , This represents a very fair increase of '36.3 per cent, over 1919 and 161.1 per cent, over 1918. - In view of the housing shortage that-exists throughout the Dominion it is satisfactory to note that of the November total' of $15,399,200, fully one-third was spent in the construction Tof new dwellings. Of these new homes there were 652 started during the month, of which 104 are located in the four western provinces. Of these 652 new residences, costing $3,- 137,900, 368 were of frame and 284 of brick construction*. Back1' of the desire of the Heaps Companv to acquire the site are three good reasons. Ono is Lhe necessity oi owning the property in order to carry out extensive permanent additions and extensions to the plant which the company would not feel inclined to do on leased property. Another reason is that the firm is at present negotiating with an eastern concern with a view to establishing on a portion of the four-acre site not in use at present, a factory for the building and assembling of railroad cars and other machinery. A third reason is that the firm, by securing the property, wishes to avoid paying a special tax which the provincial government levies on industries operating on leased property.
