Total Amount, $S,197,000. SPECIFICATIONS By Edmund Vance Cooke a few days ago, as it might be 'Erected" 's the. it's needless to WILL THE SIX-HOUR DAY SOLVE LABOR PROBLEMS? The visit of Lord Leverhulme, mil- lionaire soap manufacturer, and probably the world's greatest advocate of the six-hour day which he has introduced in his manufacturing establishments; promises.to bring the question of six-hour day versus, eight-hour day again prominently to the fore. When the Metal Trades Council and some American labor organizations adopted a resolution favoring a six-hour day, and also another resolution providing for a fine for any members who work more than four hours, overtime in any one week, the action was, to give the labor leaders the benefit of the doubt, calculated to provide employment for a greater number of men. These two are not consistent, however, with; the proposal to proclaim a nation-wide holiday on both sides of the boundary line, on May 1, to be known as "Labor's Own Labor Day." Proposing a six-hour, day, and a Ave day week, together with another holiday to he added to our already long list of unprofitable holidays, would increase the cost of living as probably no other proposition has. Labor has its own holiday—Labor Day; universally observed throughout both Canada and the United States—why "Labor's Labor Day?" The first Monday in September has always been labor's special day of celebration, and if labor wants another holiday wny not call it something else instead of confusing the point by suggesting that Labor Day is not Labor Day? The people who .work and the ones who pay the nation's bills realize that eight hours of labor are all that should be exacted of any man, and that that time is worth not less than a living wage. The merit of the first has been recognized nationally as well as a locally—it is now a law although not enforced as it should be. But at that it is more in operation than at any time in the history of labor. Eight hours is the most labor should be asked to work and eight hours is the least is should work—for eight hours pay. It is every man's privelege to work as little as he pleases, and some men would not want to work at all if they could live without it, but the wortcing conditions, an adequate wage scale and hours of labor, must be maintained or else the fabric of our economic life will fail. While the general adoption of a six-hour day at eight hours' pay would not literally add any greater number of dollars to the workers' pay check, theoretically it would add to it at the rate of $600 a year to the MINING Contracts have been let for constructing 800 feet of work that will advance a tunnel, to the Little Bertha PLAN ALTERATIONS FOR HASTINGS STREET BLOCK Plans are in course of preparation in the offlce of Architect A.
