This cannot/always be accomplished, but proper methods for' confining the fire surely can be effected, and human life can be protected by eliminating as much as possible of the loss of pre- ciotfs moments between the discovery of the fire and the summoning of those' who .are trained and equipped to combat it. TERRIBLE TOUL OF LIVES. FROM FIRE AND A POSSIBLE REMEDY. The recent tragic fire at .the Parks rooms on Pender street, with the loss of. three lives, is simply, another terrible example of the apparently ever- increasing toll.of. human life which the fire .fiend -is exacting every year^be- cause proper, precautions are.not taken to "meet.just such emergencies. This fire brings the total number of lives which have been lost from that cause this year so far to ten—which is just ten too many, even in a metropolitan city' the size of Vancouver. For one thing, it serves to accentuate the need for having all rooming and apartment houses in the city connected direct to the fire station, so that when** an- alarm- -is-turned in at the building.-jiot only, will, the occupants be notified, but the fire department will also - receive- notification without delay. 'This was one of the strongly stressed recommendations of Mr. Justice Morrison's report following the investigation of the Balmoral Apartments, fire last-June, when five lives were lost. -Nowthree more precious lives have been lost under almost similar circumstances, and practically no .further",moves have been made to have these necessary time and life- sayifig connections installed or even a time limit set' within which their installation should be made compulsory. We speak with. bated. braath of the awful toll of- war, but few realize what' an equally terrible;.sacrifiee of human life is made every year to the fire fiend owing to* inadequate protection against that destructive demon. Two .hundred rtand thirty thousand lives have been" lo'st from fire in the last ten years.','Previous estimates of' an average of* 15,000 fatalities yearly were shattered when~'the' subject of fire losaes, was carefully" .reviewed at' a recent meeting of the Committee oh Co-operation, with,.the National Board of Fire Underwriters, appointed by the Fire -. Marshals' Association ' of North America,,. The original, estimate was astounding enough'' but the final figures certainly ^indicates the necessity for a' painstaking study and enforcement of proper fire protection. We read lurid tales -of'jthe Spanish Inquisition, which' history tells us exacted .an. awful .toll., of lives and left' the curse' of-three centuries" in-its* wake. ■."The,..perpetrators, .of-these -ignoble; •deeds1' claimed-about 1000 liyejs in a year. SITE FOR WAR MEMORIAL , . IS FINALLY AGREED ON SOUTH VANCOUVER—A site in the centre of thec-park tract at Forty, third Avenue and Fraser Street, has been.finally agreed on by the South Vancouver War Memorial - committee as the most suitable location for the new Memorial Hall which is to be N, erected shortly in ^commemoration cf the fallen heroes of South Vancouver. This has "been agreed on by the War Memorial committee at a meeting this week. Tt was also decided to allot a portion of the basement in.the projected building for the exclusive use of the Horticultural Society, but the committee was unwilling to grant the use of the whole basement for„this purpose. If the Horticultural Society agrees to the decision of the committee, the work of erecting the building will be started immediately, as -practically all other details have been settled. The committee will meet again in January, when it is expected that definite action will be taken. A. E. -Citc-ell J. Mitchell A. H.
