Western Specialty Limited 572 Granville St. - Soy. P526 DROP IN MATERIAL PRICES IS NOW AFFECTING HARDWOODS The downward march of prices In building materials has now reached hardwoods, and most items show quite drastic reductions. Quartered oak, plain oak, gum, hickory and ash, all southern hardwoods, have dropped from $ii0 to in some cases $75 per M. The northern woods, such as birch and maple, have not had such sweeping cuts, but they have eased off to a considerable degree. Flooring in oak and maple is being quoted in the eastern markets at comparatively reasonable rates and the declines in these commodities should have its effect on building. • It is hardly possible that the prices of hardwoods can ever go to the prewar fevel. Few people have ever expected this. Many-producers of hardwoods claim that the present prices are below their cost of production. This is in a.'measure substantiated by the fact that a number of sawmills in the east whose cut.is.largely confined to hardwoods, are'closing-down. Their owners say that .they cannot run their plants at a' profit' on the prevailing wholesale prices. Be this as it may, the reductions -are apparently, very welcome to all concerned.- They place the hardwood business on a more solid foundation. The high crest of prices to which ,all building -commodities had surged was bound to cause a corresponding reaction, and now that this has taken place, general business should flow along in more even channels. The inflated prices have been deflated.- The wise wholesalers are making corresponding reductions to their customers in the goods they have on hand and are striving to take the greater part of their losses this year. The excellent business enpoyed in all lines at high prices for the first eight or nine months of 1920- has' placed most business" concerns in a position to stand the very considerable loss entailed by the drop in prices of stock on hand. By taking this loss this year—that is, by selling their stocks on the basis of the present low prices, and not on the basis of the high prices which they paid for them—they will still have a profitable year and be ready to do business.next year on the new levels with a clean sheet to work on. Thus, prices should become much stabilized by the first month or so in the year. All of which would seem to bring out the idea.that now is a good time to buy or build, manutacture or make repairs. (Contlnnod from pare l.> Work has already been commenced by Dixon & Murray on the manufacture of the necessary banking fixtures which will be of hardwood and strictly modern and up-to-date. The bank will get possession of the premises on January 1, and' the contractors will commence work the next day. WHO'S WHO, WHERE AND WHY, IN LOCAL BUILDING CIRCLES WEEK'S TOTAL AT PT. The aggregate value of the week's permfts is nearly half a million, the exact figures being $486,- 050. FIBRELASTIC is made with Asbestos Fibre, the most durable arid indestructible material known, as a base. This is combined by special processes with various oils, and other weather, resisting materials, producing a compound that, when used on roofs, forms a tough, elastic, durable, waterproof coating. An advantage that cannot be overlooked is the simplicity with which FIBERLASTIC can be applied and the economy effected in its use. It is not expensive in spite of its exceptional quality, as one coating of FIBERLASTIC is all that is necessary to make a thoroughly satisfactory and protective coating. The tenacious rubber-like film which FIBERLASTIC forms over various types of roofs adds to them many years of service at a minimum, of cost. It is of a nature that can be worked satisfactorily on any surface giving the same permanent and effective protection to all. FIBERLASTIC when applied to an old roof practically forms a new roof over the old, at the cost of usual roof repairs. Architect Contractor Public Works Dept Robt.
