FINE OPPORTUNITY FOR CLAY PRODUCTS "What a golden opportunity the present time offers the clay products manufacturers," is a comment frequently heard among local architects and builders apropos of the high cost .of building material. What a chance to demonstrate by actual example that brick and hollow tile for ordinary house construction may be used at almost the same cost as frame, or frame and plaster. The clay products men have long asserted this to be a fact—and have made it a text of convinving advertising sermons—but in British Columbia and other sections of the Pacific Coast where climatic advantage is on the side of frame construction. for homes, they have faced, considerable difficulty in getting their message over to any large extent. Moreover, their efforts to popularize brick and hollow tile have been considerably handicapped by the attitude of the average building contractor, who has formed the habit of thinking, in DEFER SUBMISSION OF BATH HOUSE BYLAW The board of park commissioners at its meeting on Wednesday, decided to defer, the submission of the proposed $200,000 bylaw for the erection of. a natatorium or.artificially heated swimming pool at English Bay .until some time next spring. This action was taken for two reasons. One is to allow of more time In the compilation of statistics of cost of operation ot such establishments and the preparation of the plans. The other was owing to the fact that several other money bylaws are to be submitted to the ratepayers at the coming • civic elections and the park commissioners did not wish to risk an unfavorable reception by the ratepayers of this measure for the much desired civic institution. The school board will be submitting some bylaws to the ratepayers for school additions and improvements to the ratepayers next March and it is probable that the Natatorium bylaw, will be submitted by the park board at that time.. fob ' Busy Business Men solid, substantial food served' in an appetizing flavor. STEEL PRICES TO GO UP SAY MANUFACTURERS An official of a leading independent steel company maintains that steel prices must advance owing to the fact that they are now relatively low and to the probability of further increases in production costs. When the coal trouble is finally adjusted, coal prices probably will be higher and rail rates in all probability will be advanced, he points out. With these two important cost items advanced it is inevitable that steel prices must do likewise, especially as they have been maintained around present The Chataway mine, Highland Valley, is jto be developed on a considerable scale. Title to the property has been secured and funds are available for an extensive development of the group. The mine and mill of the property operated during 1917, producing over $100,000 net smelter returns. The Silver Glance mine' at Sandon, w' ich is credited- with a yield of high grade silver lead ore, has been acquired under a. bond and lease by George Huston of Mullan, Idaho, and George T. Thayer of Walla Walla, according to report. The Silver Glance vein is about 25 feet wide, courses north and south and dips 60 degrees to the east. It is a fissure in granite. Heavy gouge seams lie against the foot and hanging walls. - The ground between is crushed granite, cemented with quartz, which carries the values. Compressed' air will be used in speeding the development. PLANS BUILDING FOR COLOR PRINTING WORKS Plans are now. in process of preparation by Architects Dalton & Eve- leigh, Davis Chambers,, for a large building to be occupied as a color printing works to house a plant for turning out show bills, posters, labels and lithographing on a big scale. The site is to be a prominent semi- business corner in the downton district, which is now being. negotiated for, and the exact location of which is withheld pending the closing of the deal. ; The building is to be of brick and heavy mill construction and will have a frontage of 175 feet with a depth of 120 feet. The owner's name is also withheld for the present until the deal for the site is completed. The building will have a couple of fireproof vaults for the storage of ink and valuable documents. The' plans will be ready for tenders for the excavating for the foundation in about two weeks time and general tenders will be caTlled about January 5, 1920. Mac DONALD & PARK EX^BcrmxcAX. EwdxirsBas Armature Winding and Motor Repairs Seymour 9686 439 Pender Lane CONTRACTORS and BUILDERS NEW HOME FOR OAK STREET Plans are being prepared by Architects Sharp & Thompson, London building, and tenders will be asked levelscby the leading producers against, for about December 16th for the erec tile influences of a naturally advancing market. "There is ah actual steel shortage and this must have its effect on mark terms of!et P"ces even more than it thus far frame as against "other types of construction, and, as material men know, habit is no small factor in determining the choice of materials. There is today however, a growing interest in brick and hollow tile for ordinary heme construction. Proof of this is found in the fact that the output of clay products from British Columbia kilns in the two years Immediately preceding the outbreak of the war reached unprecedented proportions. Since hostilities ceased in Europe and building activity has increased, there has been a very promising corresponding increase in the demand for the output, of the various B. C. kilns. While a large percentage of this output is being used for commercial and public structures and larger residences, an increasing quantity is going in£o homes of moderate cost. It is interesting to note too, that such structures are both substantial and architecturally beautiful. They also possess the additional virtue of being as nearly fireproof as it is possible to make a-dwelling. The reason for the public's chang-j ing viewpoint with regard to the neces-j sity for a switch from frame to some other form of construction is not very j difficult to fathom. It is due almost; solely to an understanding—based oni what lumber and material men them-j selves have been most sedulous in circulating—that wood as a building ma terial must soon be regarded as belonging to the category of precious stones and sugar. has," - declares the manufacturer. "Steel prices were twice reduced this year, standing virtually alone' among commodity quotations in this respect. Premium prices are being bid for steel products and it is only because leading producers are not asking more that prices are as low as they are." tion of a seven-room stucco home to be built on Oak street near 57th street. Coolings, formerly of New York, but
later of Los Angeles, the real native
heath of the genus bungalow, is the
architect who is now engaged in designing homes to order for the Fauld's
firm. And he is being kept pretty
busy at that. Last week he designed
four special bungalows for purcnas-
ers of Shaughnessy Park lots, which
are to be^erected just as soon as the
contracts"' are awarded. With the
firm se'ifng homes right off Mr. Coi-
iinge's plans, and he to supervise the
construction, it looks like a cinch that
he will be pretty busy for some time
to come. •■ '9
Mr. Collinge will design homes exclusively for Fauld's Bureau and expects to have half a dozen cosy homes
from his plans under construction in
Shaughnessy Park before the end. of
the year.
