The Dominion's actual war expenditure has already amounted to over that sum by one hundred million, and it can be safely left to Sir George Foster to see to it that Canada gets her share of indemnity. dreamed of. CANADA'S WAR INDEMNITY. With the appointment" of Sir George Foster, Canada's minister of trade and commerce, as the Dominion's' representative , on the British indemnities board, it becomes quite evident that Canada intends to demand a very substantial sum in tli'e way of a cash indemnity/from that outcast nation which will soon be' called on to pay the price of her dream world dominance. Sir George has long been recognized as one of Canada's •-'great wizards on figures. Aside from that, he is perhaps more familiar than any other ".member, of the present federal government with the expenditures which Canada has been forced to make since the out- One billion, one hundred million dollars would be little enough cash recompense for Canada for the part she has taken in clipping the claws" of tlie Huns. And as there seems to be nothing to prevent such an indemnity being exacted, except the necessary time either for Germany to pay it with whatever good grace she can command, or for the Allies to arrange for such methods of collection as are considered most effective, it would seem that despite her awful sacrifices in blood and treasure, Canada will get back a good deal of her treasure at least. If the Dominion government gets; one billion dollars in Avar indemnity, a good deal of that sum would naturally be spent at once in payment of war claims and bonded indebtedness. But even these would leave a substantial margin of several hundreds of millions to be expended, in public works on a scale hitherto un- 'GRAND' FORKS.—Granby smelter resumed operations on Monday after a close down which was occasioned by the 'non-supply of ore and coke, the output of which . was almost at j quite the vanishing point through the ef- work. The lakeshore mine, .which has been closed down for the winter months, will probably ,h& equipped with a compressor and air drills'next year. FEDERAL TRUCK MAKES GOOD AT COAL MINE What the motor truck is dolns to alleviate the coal situation is illustrated by the case'of the Pixie Bee Line Coal Co., Mortons Gap, Ky., which through use. of one motor, truck has been enabled to supply to the nation 17,250 tons of coal which otherwise never would have left the mine, according- to a letter to the Federal Motor Truck Co,, written by G. E. Henry, secretary of the mining company. < ; "This truck has been our salvation in the coalr business,", says Mr. Henry. "The fuel administration ordered the railroads not to furnish cars to. 'wajion mines' as the mines using teams and wagons for haulage from the mine to the car, are called. As we were a. wag on mine, we would have been compelled to close down, as other wagon mines, it" it were_u«'—fOi- the fact that we were able "To gev^-a Federal truck 'in time. A->. "We haul in this Federal 50 tons a day over a mile of common dirt road, and are able to do the work of hauling as economically as the big mines." Mr. Henry states that his company saves '$83-l.26 a month on haulage, the figure being arrived at by comparing the costs of their present truck haulage with that of team and wagon haulage. Another mining lirm, Browning. Med- !ock and p'Briaat, are operating (a Federal truck', and are loading on the same spur as the Dixie Bee Line Co. ;.In event of truck trouble with the trucks of either mine, the other truck is thrown into the temporary haulage gap.
