ESTIMATING CONTRACTS  \ Committees of the Seattle Chaptci  :' of the American Institute of Architects  'and the Seattle Master Builders re  cently completed a plan which is calculated will go a long way toward saving the expense of much useless estimating in building work.  It is obvious that when several con-  tractors bid upon a certain project considerable labor is spent in determin-  * ing the quantities alone, the cose' oi  estimating on a large' improvement  with several contractors figuring is  enormous and an expense of overhead  which, is , absorbed by the building  owners eventually. This duplication  of effort'may be eliminated without reducing the element of competition by  the employment' either by a group of  architects' or contractors or both of a  quantity estimator who will determine  the amount of material entering into  the work instead of each contractor  doing this' and charging his expense  to the work, as at present. The coal  situation is serious, but Canadian railways are. reported to have received  assurances of sufficient fuel supplies  from.the United States.  WINNIPEG—Holiday trade has commenced and will be considerably in  excess of last year. Wholesale and  retail trade and collections are good.
