HOSPITAL BOARD WANTS $30,000 FOR NURSES HOME ■The board of directors of the Vancouver General Hospital intend to press energetically for the construction of a new nurses' home which is so urgently needed in connection with hospital equipment. The - board decided last week to a'pro'ach the city council at its meeting this afternoon for. a'loan of $30,000 to erect the proposed building, and will offer the city security for that amount by mortgaging certain property, including the Graves' estate which is owned by the hospital board. . In case the'city council declines to advance the money which is considered probable in view of the fact that, the ,city will have an. operating de- ! licit of about $60,000 this year—the ! hospital authorities will approach j local bond firms with a view to securing the necessary finances to erect '. the nurses' home. _ j ___, ; ; : PLANS TO BUILD FIFTY RESIDENCES IN REGINA REGINA, SASK.—A company is being organized here, to be known as the x\llied Building and Loaning Company. SEY.9217 The paucity-of .results which has followed,'every effort that has been made to" lower the • prevailing high prices and to relieve uncomfortable conditions generally, goes to establish their inevitability so long as present circumstances continue. The cause is fundamental and m/tinkering with the tariff or the surface conditions will remove it. High prices are a necessary and inevitable accompaniment of high wages. By the removal of superfluous middle men, both in the dealings in the necessaries of life as well as building materials or any other commodities, something may be. done to reduce the margin of profits which the consumer., has to pay. But it is obviously unreasonable to look for any great measure of relief.while costs are what they are all.down'the line. No mayor,-cabinet minister, premier or even* a king can abrogate the laws of arithmetic. That applies just' as forcibly to the building supply trade and building conditions generally as it does to the much-reviled beet barons, sugar "trusts and..even the much reviled, packing houses. With.regard to cold "storage and -packing houses, that isja question too broad to be considered in a few sentences. They have their' uses and abuses, but their principle is one which" some lines of the building supply trades might adopt to advantage - in' the' matter of accumulation or manufacture of supplies "in .equal' quantity during the winter months as .they do while summer building activity is at its height. It is very- questionable if any benefit would accrue to the average' consumer if the packing houses all over, the country were abolished. Closer regulation may be possible, but they-are certainly not the unmixed evil of popular superstition. •It took nearly thirteen years after the American civil war for prices of the"'* average commodities to work down to their pre-war level, and .while, there is every indication that Canada will recover from the far morei*exten- sive and immeasurably moire - costly effects of the great war, it is an assured fact that it will take half a decade yet before things.come down to anywhere near their' former level. There are plenty of men—far-sighted tlioYity of flying , officers with the establishment. ^ The new air station, when completed will be in the form of a huge letter "H." One wing of the "H" will form a hangar for the two large planes that will be set up,'while the other wing will form hangars for several smaller planes. The center' section* will be occupied as a machine shop, garage and administrative offices. It is part of this center" section which is now being built by Messrs Sloan & Harrison, who were the successful tenderers for the buildh-g. It is expected that the government will award the contraci-.' shortly for the construction of a concrete landing platform, of considerable size on the beach lor use in connection with/ the launching and landing of the large airplanes whose weight makes it impracticable to bring them over t,he; sand. The small and lighter airplanes can land quite easily on Temporary, plank runways over the. sand. '. * meeting of the council, and'Other'officers present included Vice-President C. 1-Iwood Watkins and Mr. Percy Fox of Victoria, and' Mr. -VF. S. Twizell, and Mr. Fred L. Townley, honorary- secretary, of this, city The sessions were held on Saturday and lasted from 10 a.m. until 11:30 p.m.,. with two intervals for luncheon' ancj^dinner. The constitution and by-laws were also given careful consideration and some minor revisions. .»,' The-following applications for membership were passed Jupoh and recommended for admittance to the, Institute while a, number of other applications were held over for further consideration and enquiry. REPORTS BIOS ARE INVITED ON NEW FERRY LANDINGS Tenders are, now' being invited by the public work department of the provincial government for -the construction of ferry landings at both Woodward's Landing and Ladner on the Fraser river. Bids will be received up to noon of Monday, October 11, and plans and specifications may be( obtained'at the office of the "district engineer, court.house, Vancouver, or at the public works, department, ;*Vic- toria. The usual ten per cent, deposit must accompany each tender. ' \ New ferry landings have, been badly needed at both these places for some time owing to the constantly increasing amount of motor and other vehicular traffic acrss the Fraser river at this point. The landings in each:case a'.re to be of the floating type secured by piles, as owing to the varying changes of water level due^ to both tides, and the state of the river, it is impracticable to have a fixed landing. RUSH IN STEEL ORDERS SLOWS BUf PRICES FIRM NEW YORK—The "Iron Age" says: The waiting'attitude'of buyers of pig iron and steel has been more marked in the past week. Pressure for early supplies of everything in finished steel, with the possible exception of tin plate and wire products, has disappeared. Buyers generally , seem confident that they can get steel for 1921 when they need it and at prices not above those of today. Pig iron production in* August, -under better railroad operation, rose to a point only exceeded this year by March and in 1919 by January alone. The total was 3,147,402 gross tons, or 101,529 tons a day, as against 3,067,- 043 tons in July, or 93,965 tons a day. September promises further increase. Twenty-three furnaces blew in last month and-five blew out.—a net gain of 18. On September 1 the estimated daily capacity of the 311 furnaces In blast was 104,265 tons a day, against 93,695 tons a day for 293 furnaces on August 1. , ' RW TOM BT-.-.X- QU0T-.T-0.rS.
