Residence To be accorded credence and acceptance by the public, individually or as a community, any proposition must be based on irrefutable grounds. ;It mus. show definite proof of its value from the,, grounds of morals, health, pleasure, comfort, finances, civicism. To give anything a true name, localize it and give it value. "Home" is defined as. one's own dwelling place; the abiding place of the affections; a place of refuge and -rest where a thing or a person is usually found. The idea of permanence thus expressed is impossible in a rented building whose occupancy is to a certain extent subject to the whim of ^partmnt House the owner. This'lack of permanence Garase Bldg .. , Residence loosens the ties of sentiment, weakens the belief in the refuge of home, inculcates the thought of unrest and transientness, and takes away the primal meaning of home—the protection of the young of the family. To own one's own home insures permanence and instils in the young mind that idea of refuge and protection so "vital to morals. Possession and ownership of the dwelling insures more free ability .to secure living conditions which tend to health. Necessary changes can be made without having to meet the whims or desires of another person—the landlord. The. requirements ot-the owners' family can alone be considered. The man who owns his own home insures a protection for his family. He is investing rather than buying. The fact that he has bought or is buying a home gives him a better credit rating in the community; for that action shows that his residence will be J7.000 ....;..... $17,000 .-. $9,500 $5,000 ..........;. $30,000 ......$8,000 „..;;.;;-..:.....$7,500 ...;..:..........,.$9.074 :..:.... ...$6,-22 ..; :."; .$6000 :..........-...:.;.$6doo ..;....„...;_. $7,000 ..;...,..- $6,800 ............... $13,000 ._.....„: .$8,000 .....$27,500 $10,500 $6,000 .......$15,000 $5800 :..$ 5.200 ......$5,000 .-. ..'$5,800 : $12,000 $5,000 .....A.......... $6,600 ............. $10,000 .................$34,500 ................ $10,000 $5,000 Residence $8.0u0 FRANK M. TORONTO—Travelers are starting on fall trips, Rural Ontario anticipate'J a good retail trade throughout fall and winter.. Crop conditions are fair, in some cases very good, and active retail business is; anticipated. Orders placed with wholesalers indicate merchants expect, better business than a year ago. In Toronto retail trade has been brisk, especially following the exhibition. The exhibition proved a success from a commercial standpoint. Scarcity of goods is still a big raw- back to wholesale and retail business-. Woolens and cottons are very /hard to secure. Labor condition-- are oetter than a short, time ago. The strike in Cobalt has been ended, and more than half of the men are back.,. Mines are opening up very quickly. The exchange is becoming very active. Cattle and hog quotations continue to de- jcline. Hogs are now bought at $19.25 per 100, fed and .watered. These figures compare with $2.-) a month or so ago. Farmers anticipated a drop in prices and are taking it as a matter, of course. -Milk prices are stiffening. Cheese is expected to decline/owing to the, British government statement that 20,000 tons will be all required of Canada. Building and real estate are very- brisk. WINNIPEG—Wholesale and retail trade is good. Collections are fair. Industry is busy. Threshing is nearly completed. The boilers were received from the makers in a knockdown condition and were assembled on the job by the contractors. Due to the fact that the plant is located on the low ground of the foreshore of the Cove considerable heavy pile driving was necessary. Besides installing-the power plant Mundy, Rowland & Company also carried out the concrete work of other parts of the plant which includes concrete liquor tanks, smelter foundations floors and sewers. A decidedly'novel innovation in this work was the; installation of five reinforced concrete di- gester tanks, which are conceded to be quite a new- departure in pulp and mill construction. The same firm also carried out the complete electrical installation of the pulp mill, saw mill and shingle mill, which "comprises approximately 2500 horsepower iri connected motor load. Representatives of the firm have been heartily congratulated by the owners on the successful manner in. which the -work on all the various units of the plant was carried out. SEATTLE CONTRACTORS TO ■>•- BUILD IDAHO HIGHVVAY SEATTLE—Contract for a part of the North and South Highway, lying between the mouth of Whitebird Creek and New Metdows, in Idaho; has been awarded to Grant Smith & Co., of Seattle, for approximately $625,000. WORK ON DRYDOCK TO BE STARTED SOON With several firms having filed plans with the Dominion Governmental Ottawa for drydocks which are planned to be constructed here,-and one firm in particular ready to make on imrae- j diate start on the long-desired utility, : strong and united effort is to be made I by the cities of Vancouver and North I Vancouver as well as'all surrounding i municipalities to have the government take action without delay on some one of the various plans submitted. For that purpose a oint meeting of the councils of the two cities and the municipalities concerned is to be heid next Tuesday in the city hall to consider what action shall be taken, as it is reported from "Ottawa that for economical reasons, the government 16 j averse to sanctioning any drydock ' plans for tins port, as it would mean ; the payment of a conside:able sum to the drydock firm by way of a 4'/_ per cent, bonus under the provisions of the Drydocks Subsidy Act. According to a statement made by Mr. J. J. Coughlan, work will be started hi about ten days, on clearing the site recently purchased on Rurrard Inlet in preparation for a dry-dock.
