That the plain and homely customs of pioneer days ha*ve a charm even now was shown recently near Abbotsford when nearly fifty men—mostly neighboring farmers accepted the' invitation*of a well known returned soldier farmer to "raise" the'frame of, a barn he was erecting. The affair passed off very successfully and the frame, of the barn was put up In record time. In pioneer days barn raisings were frequent and* delightful affairs. The timbers of ...the barn were, made, from native1 trees/ In,'the real early days .they were hewn, but in-later and" more progressive days the portable 'saw mill made it easier to get out the dimension stuff. The timbers were cut and mortised and the ""but;" or section of the frame was put together in orderly fashion and placed ready for the raising. . There were no derricks then; no long, engines topnTl the heavy timbers into place. Men lifted them by sheer strength/held themin place with long pike poles while a^e men clambered- up the frame, helped swing the, connecting timbers into place and drive the wooden pins that held the frame together. ... ...-. ,f .* There was no pay for the work done at a barn raising, «ave the chicken dinner at noon .and t"he ample stores of food served at the -supper that, came when the frame was up. The day and the work were given as the contribution to community development. Raisings were picnic ^affairs, despite the heavy and at .times dangerous work, but the "entire neighborhood turned —; : a In addition to the • $100,000 home building program, a $25,000 dock, the^ appropriation for which has been made by. the Dominion Government, is soon to be under way, the site for the same having been designed by Senator J. D. Taylor, Mr. F. B. Stacey Federal M. P. from loco and others. All the work will be urged to completion by both government officials and the Independent Oil Company.
