Say.7 89S R MODERN TRANSFORMATIONS POSSIBLE' IN UGLY OLD HOUSES There was never a time "when the services, tastes and special knowledge of the trained architect were,' more needed or more in demand than right now. The carpenter and ^builder have for years been consulting experts in the building of thousands of city and suburban homes and farmhouses, and let us give them the credit, at least before the jigsaw'era, for many beautiful and''charming old houses.' But the present.times demand more highly- trained men" and * expert "building, doctors'* to" use more of a medical than a.building .term. , " „ . . ..,('■ - ,i * - . ■ :.; : Following the building .shortagejn these later-years lias come an. appreciation, of the fact that any old, house, or new, be It as hopelessly /Ugly, as It may, has * possibilities.. Architecture has shown many instances of "before and after," of old,- ramshackle, barnlike, sfructures, altered'Into^ most delightful -homes: Old, barns have- been even'' made over into charming; stu: dios a^d Jiving quarters or woodsheds incorporated'into the redesigning of an old .farm house. Everywhere is shown a wider appreciation of the fact that nothing* is .impossible to the architect of taste 'and skill.' The old and hopelessly ugly"* city brownstone house- and^'the-' little two * or'- three story brick house - or stable -on-a side street' have* been made"' into*' artistic" ana ''attractive apartments'or studio buildings. It is to the architect that we^ owe this renaissance and yet we have only made « beginning toward the .development of ".the city beautiful -from old, .unsightly and out-of-date structures. Lest someone should say "that we-'are dealing with merely idealistic .'matters, withour own * desire for better things artistically, we remark that in every instance these" "artistic" improve- ments have proven the very best of business in'.-increased rents and more desirable tenants'." If the cost of new buildings has deterred many from carrying*-out-their long'ctierishe'd'*dream of owning their own home;- there is abundant opportunity,, almost everywhere for the al teration of old places at a very moderate cost.
