Limited 2635 Granville St. WOOD DECAY IS PREVENTED BY PROPER AND TIMELY PAINTING From the standpoint of the average consumer, such as a builder or contractor, ' more • has' been expected of wood and less done to help it serve a great variety of purpose than almost any building material. It is a comparatively modern conception that proper preservative ' treatment is, practical and economical in the city home' as well as on the farm. Good paint is a good friend of lumber, and'while not' usually considered in that light, is the one protection against the natural process of decay which has been universally used and not found wanting. Yet the well painted house has unprotected floor beams in moist wall, door steps on wet ground, and many inside surfaces and timbers which are continually exposed to conditions favorable to decay. The wonderful service which wood has given during all the years with little or'no consideration of the factors which destroy, brings into greater prominence the possibilities of preservative treatment under the present day desire for permanence and elimination of waste. No one expects unprotected steel to do anything but rust. Concrete is waterproofed and its 'surface pro^ tected from abrasion and disintegration; fabrics are sheilded from the elements, while wood/ has been largely left, to shift for itself. The application of wood-preserving methods to the everday uses of lumber, where it needs protection from decay, is in keeping, with modern ideas. .A structure coated with sheets of India rubber would not be as well protected from decay as a structure coated with a good oil paint.' This is due to the fact that a sheet of rubber is not so durable or even as waterproof "as a thin dried film, of paint. The latter material when applied dries, to a continuous elastic film containing neatly divided partic- less of metallic wear-resisting pigments. A square foot of such a film upon a wooden surface costs less than a penny, yet it would beautify and protect a dolar's worth of sur- Plate, Sheet, Figured, Wired,Art,PrEsm, Colored, etc. BRITISH COLUMBIA RECORD Wholesale and Retail W. TO BUILD RESIDENCE IN WEST VANCOUVER WEST VANCOUVER—Mr. F. Tat- tersall of Vancouver has purchased two acres near the Municipal hall and 'intends to erect a $5,000 residence. STREET IMPROVEMENTS VICTORIA—Esquimalt Road between Point Ellice Bridge and Springfield Avenue may be paved this year, it was learned Wednesday at the City Hall. The Provincial Government has agreed to meet its share of the cost and, while special legislation must be secured to validate the agreement to be entered into between the city and the Province, it is probable that an understanding may be reached in the meantime that will make it possible to start actual work within a few weeks." PLANS INTERNATIONAL $28,000,000 BRIDGE DETROIT, Mich.—The proposal, to connect" Detroit and Windsor with a bridge across the Detroit River has moved nearer fruition by a meeting of representatives of twenty-five prominent capitalists here who will furnish $10,000,000 for the construction. It is estimated' the bridge would cost about $28,000,000 and would be of the suspension type. Negotiations already are under way to obtain the remainder of the sum needed. Tentative plans call for a bridge about 2,000 feet long carrying two seven-foot sidewalks, two street car tracks and four railroad tracks] The bridge would be 110 feet high at the centre and 100 feet high at each end. This would be in line with an agreement with the Great Lakes. Carrier Association. An inquiry Into the needs of vessels that would use the proposed Great Lakes-St. Lawrence waterway has shown that no wireless masts'more than 100 feet high will be required on ships.
