-bui'lding .
".Recent despatches from. Great Brit-
■ -ain state that among the novel method's adopted to. solve the housing
shortage there—and especially the
acute shortage and delay in securing
. building material—is the adoption of
'compressed earth as a'building mater-
-ial for-dwelling construction.- It has
Tjeen found that the cost of an entire
bouse is roughly "speaking," one-tenth
.-of that of a similar, structure of brick.
Blocks of , suitable ' earth, rammed
and' compressed, supply splendid material for* the building of houses in
rural districts, leaving the bricks and
; ^mortar for use in the' towns and cities
■where, other - building material, can-
..330t W obtained. The estimate for
the, exterior walls of a six-roomed
bungalow which has been erec ed,' if
"built of brick, was $1,000. Their cost
in earth worked out at less than $100,
ana the work was completed in less
, than a month by two men.
The walls are eighteen inches thick
and seem to be harclening^to the consistency of a soft sandstone. Although
they have 'been built for more than
tAvo months, all the "moisture seems to
"have gone out of them and the house
shows practically no dampness and is
quite habitable. Emphasis is. laid on
". the fact that earth with a consider-
•able percentage of clay in it is best.
The walls of this experimental house
■were formed of ordinary loam with s
slight preponderance of clay. -The
earth was tightly rammed between
"boards' which are bolted IS inches
rapart. The.boards are left in place
"until the earth has hardened sufficiently to permit of their removal, when
they may be used in the erection of
another house. Or, as was the case
in the construction of this first house,
only a. couple of feet of boarding may
be erected at a time, and when this
lias hardened another course is laid
"'on top, and so on until the wall has
reached the full heighth desired. A
thin exterior layer of cement, or liquid
cement from a "cement gun" improves the outside appearance and renders it much more durable, but this is
said to be not absolutely necessary or
- essential.
"Wooden blocks are inserted in the
■walls where it will be necessary to
fix window frames and floors. Interior -walls dividing the rooms, are made
- from two-inch: breeze slabs composed
of a. mixture of ashes and cement,
which gives strength and lightness.
The several bungalows which have
already been constructed by this method have plenty of. cupboard space and
a bathroom -ahd-practically all. modern
conveniences. •
Owing to the cheapness of construction, these bungalows together with
six- small outbuildings and four and
one half acres of land can be leased
at the surprisingly low rental of $2.50
per week. •

PORT RENFREW SEEKS TO
■ GET GOVERNMENT WHARF
PORT,RENFREW, B., C—A strong
agitation has" been started among the
residents and settlers in this vicinity
to have the Dominion government
either take over the present wharf
owned by Mr. A. H. Sherman, who
runs the local cannery, or build a new
wharf. Although the settlers and
others have been allowed free wharfage as far as taking their goods in
is concerned, there are no storage
facilities available under existing conditions and'the arrangements are for
from ' satisfactory. The residents
maintain that the district and population is of sufficient importance now
to wairant the construction of a government wharf.
As the puesent wharf is now owned
by a ward in chancery, and cannot
be secured except by considerable red
tape, every effort is being made by
Col. Mcintosh, the .Dominion member,
to have the government call for tenders for the construction of a" federal
owned wharf.

leasers, are taking out high grade silver ore from 'a new lead. They expect to ship a carload of ore in a few
clays. '
R. Lee has the Defiance' under
lease. Development work is going on
at this property and last week a new
lead of exceptionally fine -silver ore
was encountered. The new find has a
width of IS inches.
As* there are more mines operating
around Greenwood than in any year
in its history, -and a higher grade of
ore being shipped, the Ledge is-sorry
that tlie Province reporter with the
Vancouver Board of Trade had not
time to acquaint -himself with these
; facts before writing that rather uncomplimentary article about this city.

sive changes to this building which
practically amounted to complete remodelling; ~ia fact, the contract had
been awarded and work was to have
been commenced this weefc by, Contractor Joseph Bye on the alterations.
He had started. to assemble material
on the job when the fire of Wednesday stopped the work and will probably, render rebuilding instead of remodelling necessary now.
The damage is estimated at about
S25,000, and in addition to the actual
loss on the'building, many "of the
mounted policemen who were quartered in the burned-southern wing Ipst
all their effects. The fire departments
of Point Grey and a sQuadron of the
I city- brigade had a difficult task preventing the fire destroying the entire building owing to the water pressure being so low.' In fact, had it
not been for vthe use of the chemical
engines and the services of the gasolene pumpers which were attached to
the mains, the entire building would
have been doomed.
The department at Ottawa has been
| communicated with and a decision in
| regard to rebuilding or seeking other
' quarters is now being av^aited. It is
j expected that owing to the scarcity of
