It is expected that by the end of the current month the value of new buildings this year in'Point Grey will have reached if not surpassed, last year's total. That is a state of affairs that speaks for itself. red tape connected with its application. It is important that any new legislation drafted for these., purposes should be flexible enough, to adjust itself to the rapidly fluctuating, cost of material and ' labor, an<T should.be simple enough ,to be applied without a large amount of government restriction .and regulation. It is probable that similar power placed.in the hands, of provinces and municipalities would produce better and quicker results. LEGISLATIVE ACTION NEEDED, TO FINANCE BUILDING ! 'more homes; ; v -j "Everywhere 'now in the -two groat ~*English speaking nations is clear evi- -ftencethat an acute housing shortage .is adding to the present social un- "i-est. j Continued neglect of a definite policy pn the part of both the Can-' adian as well as the American govern- 'xoents to encourage home construction ion a large and practical scale threat- -«n8 to impair the. welfare o£> both . 2-nations. According to careful surveas there, is room for at least a quarter of --ml -million new homes throughout Canada, and at least one million additional •dwellings in the United States. • Proper housing will do much to* increase production, stabilize-labor conditions ' and increase- plant efficiency. During the war it was necessary to' curtail Uuilding operations to the absolute -minimum. Today it is deemed equal- 'Jy necessary to' resume construction -work in order to safeguard our nation- ail integrity, and it is urged that everything possible be done to encourage Tflie construction of suitable homes. Since the signing of the armistice, loosing conditions generally throughout the country have failed to improve. Instead, there is evidence from scores of cities, that conditions are just about tlie same asT.prevail in Vancouver. (Some places are naturally worse off . than others, but-the housing shortage -in this city' promises to be a really 'serious problem next winter. ' , 'Jlome, construction has'been further curtailed because of the necesity of .■providing - capital upon - short term 'loans to tide industries -over- the reconstruction period; diverting capital from long term loans - based' on. r«al estate mortgages. A careful and comprehensive study should be -made by tne Dominion government of the sources of capital available for building, giving consideration to the advisability -of creating liberal and beneficial legislation to aid in home building. And it will have to be legislation based on more "liberal principles than any drawn so far to produce really effective result*. • The Canadian government some two years ago provided for a loan of ?25,- 000,000 at 5 per cent, to the provih- =ci*.l governments for housing purposes. That loan undoubtedly helped considerably in many cases but it was only the most urgent cases where a returned man was actually in need of ■m home, that he would accept .the many restrictions and interminable Tred tape that had to be gone through )in order to take advantage of a loan under these conditions. The British Oovei'nment has a somewhat similar scheme, but like the Canadian-plan; it too has been hampered in producing Tresnlts; owing to .the restrictions and PORT MOODY PLANS TO "} I . The returns submitted by the municipal building inspector tor the past month indicate more conclusively than ever- Lhe preference that is being given Point Grey in the matter of home- sites and home building. There is no need to boost an ■ "own your own" home" campaign in Point Grey which right now. -can probably show a hjglv er -percentage, of home owners who own .really creditable residences, than any ,other, municipality in the province. Certainly the aggregate value of residences in Point-grey would sur,-' pass that of any other municipality in B. C. and this aggregate keeps oh steadily climbing, despite the prevailing high cost of building materials. During July there were a total of 59 permits issued by the municipal building department which authorized censtruction of an 'aggregate value of ?177,750. This shows a satisfactory increase over -> the«, same month last year, despite tlie increases in material prices which has taken place in the Interim.' E^or July, "19197 the records' show 51 permits issued of a total .value of $16,105, which was a record at that time, but is surpassed by the past month. ■"". - - '' The phenomenal increase in building activity in Point. Grey that has been carried on this year as compared with last is shown to a marked degree in a comparison of the return/; for the first seven months of this yeajr and 1919. The value of building permits issued in the first seven monthe of last year was $523',- 991. This has not only been more than doubled already in the seven months of this year, for the value of construction already authorized amounts to the imposing total of $1,205,- The ore body struck on the eighth level of the Rambler-Cariboo mine near Three Forks, several months ago, has improved under recent development. The ore disclosed at the cutset was less than a foot in width. Operations were interrupted by a strike of miners in the Slocan district, of which-Three Forks is a part. They were resumed by a party of young men who desired employment for-a shoxt'.(time.v *'■■<. •■ ■•; *■. ?.; _Peter Tardiff „,,: General I Contractor REPAIRS AND ALTERATIONS 1121 Bidwell St. g Scy.7898R I Jot it down in a Loose Leaf Memo IT fits the vest-pocket and is always ready, to receive facts and: figures and all kinds of data, such tas every busy person needs. > New sheets replace old ones, making the cover a permanent investment.
