During the last three or. four years, while virtually every commodity has registered' a steady advance in price, real'estate has remained at a standstill. Gardiner has opened up offices at 701-705 Vancouver block and has lost no time in getting busy at the practice of his profession which was interrupted by the call to the colors three years ago. Although Mr. Gardiner only returned from, France a short time ago, he'has a surprising amount of work already in hand. Chief among the undertakings on which he has been commissioned is the supervision of the structural alterations, and redecorating of the former'Marpole residence which was recently purchased by General J. W. Stewart. Extensive 'alterations and complete redecorating is being given this handsome home at a cost of about ,'12,000. Associated with Mr. Gardiner in the redecorating is Signor Marega, I the well known local sculptor, who has been commissioned to prepare a number of statutory groups for the house and grounds. ' Another job which Mr. Gardiner has in hand is the interior structural alterations and remodelling of the Canadian Bank of Commerce branch at the corner of Broadway and Main streets. Mr. Gardiner has also prepared plans for two bungalows for Ma]. A. B. Snyder on which work is to start immediately. THE IRON AGE. AH the week's iron and steel trade developments, are favorable, with indications of sustained if not cumulative activity throughout tne summer. In the Pittsburgh district operations are on a larger scale, the Carnegie Steel Co. having 75 to 80 per cent, of ingot capacity active, while a large independent interest there is above 80 per cent. A broadening inquiry from all parts of the globe marks the export market. Buyers'are slow to accept, the belief-here in the stability of prices, but the volume of contracting' is sufficiently large to indicate1 there is no summer-time dullness in foreign trade. Tin plate is now reckoned in export activity. A Pittsburgh mill has booked fully 20,000 boxes for Japan and much more is under negotiation. PROPOSE LARGE FEDERAL BUILDING AT FAIRBANKS WASHINGTON—Delegate Grisby, of Alaska has introduced a bill In the house appropriating' $20,0000 for a government building at Fairbanks. LUMBER DEMANDS TO BE ENORMOUS Axel H. Oxholm, who has just returned from a trip of two years in Europe for the United States Department of Commerce, told the West Coast Lumbermen's Association and the Western Pine Manufacturers' Association in. joint meeting last week in Seattle that the lumber demands of Europe will be enormous for the next few years. He said the Scandinavian countries will be unable to market any great amount of lumber for three or four years. MINING WHY, OF COURSE! a man % Bitmness has been Ruined by advertising (But'his competitor .'.Did the advertising). NEW STRIKES NEAR REVELSTOKE REVELSTOKE—A rich strike of gold-bearing ore has been made on the mining claims owned by Mrs. Jowett, near the famous Golden Cup property. The assay returns show six ounces of gold and 60 ounces of silver. A rich vein of silver-lead ore has also been uncovered on the Gold Bug mining claim in the Lardeau country, owned by James Livingstone and is situated 7 miles above Ferguson. D. Morgan and Lew Thomson, well known mining men, have taken a lease and bond on the Mammoth mine at Camborne, B.C, and intend to develop the property on a large scale. The long drawn out legal battle between the John Hopp ana R. T. Ward interestseover certain valuable hydraulic gold properties in the Cariboo disit- rict is considered practically over and decided in favor of R. T. Ward and his associates. The privy council, to which the case was carried, has reserved decision, but private advices from England declare that the Hopp interests are almost sure to lose their appeal.
