The publication of a double-page ad- "vertisement of architects specializing in school work in a leading school publication recently is interesting and significant of the changing attitude of "members of this profession toward advertising. While for many years the T»a was placed on the use of adver- "tisements by architects" for the purpose of getting clients, the fact that architects 'as a body have resorted.to '^business promotion methods along ;other lines has helped to demonstrate ?the absolute inconsistency of the for- anrter. ruling regarding advertising in -^publications. \ The architects is permited to solicit ^commissions directly in person, and *t© use letters for this "purpose. If he ■"any seek clients irr this fashion, why .-vlieuld he not offer his services through the medium of a dignified advertisement, especially when this is directed to a particular group of -people—such as would be reached by •.^reliable trade paper, to whom he is " 4dl a position to render a valuable -^specialized service? c "There is no anology between the 'Btodical man and the architect, and -Ch* fact that doctors do not adver- ~*ise does not represent an argument •gainst architects advertising. Doc- tars are not permitted to solicit cases, «jther directly or indirectly, and the ^freedom with which architects are -jpermitted to present their claims .to consideration puts them in a different class from that occupied by the physi- -cdans. The tendency towards specializa- "don on the part of the architects, "^rhich has been more marked of recent -years, makes these professional men "more interested than heretofore in cultivating those in the fields with "which their work is principally con- icerned. Class, trade and technical -^papers in those fields are the logical •.radiums by means'of which to make 'their announcements and to get in 'touch with those desiring specialized -'architectural service. TO UNDERTAKE DETAIL PLANS FOR ARCHITECTS Mr. T. Korner, who is. favorably known for his professional ability among the members of the architectural profession in British Columbia, has opened offices at 217 ,Winch building and launched out into a hew draughtsman service for architects that should fill the proverbial long-felt want. In a profession of such a.fluctuating nature of that of architecture, the fact that a competent architect and a permanent staff; of draughtsmen are available to prepare detail plans or duplicate drawings or any nature in connection with building construction of any kind should be a great convenience to architects who find themselves pressed for time in turning out plans. In his new line of work Mr. Korner announces his aim is to be absolute accuracy and quick service in delivering completed detail plans of any work entrusted to his care. It is the first institution of its kind here and local architects will no doubt find it convenient as the summer rush comes. PLANS FINE HOME FOR SHAUGHNESSY HEIGHTS Plans are now being prepared by Architect Edwardes Sproat, '403 Dominion, building, for, a handsome,, two- story residence to be erected on Shaughnessy Heights for Mr. J. Dun- das. The dwelling: is to contain all modern improvements including hardwood floors and hot air heating. The plans will be completed in.,a"few days when tenders will be invited, due notice of which will be given in these columns. EXCAVATING LAND CLEARING SEWERS - Drains Etc. Sey. 4396 , SPEND $15,000 TO PUT CAUSEWAY IN SHAPE City Engineer Fellowes has ;been authorized by the civic board of works to spend $15,000 "to put the Coal Harbor causeway in as good shape as possible in its present partly completed state to accommodate the heavy traffic of the coming summer months. The city engineer's department has already commenced operations by installing a temporary gravity tramway to carry graded material taken from the small hill at the north end of the causeway down onto the filled portion of the causeway. Two roadways across the causeway will be rocked and graded, new cinder pathways constructed for pedestrian traffic and the- approaches graded' and put In better shape. The city engineer will put a considerable force at work there and make an effort to have it completed' before May 15 so as to havi: the causeway in shape for Pageant Week and the following holiday, Empire Day. ; ''■ PLAN ALTERATIONS TO WESTMINSTER STORE Tenders are now being invited by Architects Townley & Matheson, 325 Homer street, from a number of selected New Westminster contractors for the interior structural alterations to the store building on ' Columbia street of the Merchants, Ltd., New Westminster. The alterations are estimated to cost in the neighborhood of $5,000, Sam Leong and Hip Quen, two prominent local Chinese merchants. The construction will be thoroughly modern and comply with all the requirements of the No. 1 fire limits, which means that the structure will be of reinforced concrete, brick and tile. ■ 'The'*plans show that the building, which will have a frontage of 50 feet with a depth of SO feet, will have a full concrete basement and a large store on the ground floor. There will also be a large mezzanine floor above the store proper. The upp^er two floors will be laid out as apartment flats. Tenders will close at noon next Tuesday.
