' REBUILDING OF ENGLAND TO TAKE SEVEN YEARS ■ Seven years is the official estimate itf the length of time that will elapse 'tjeTore normal conditions of living are ^restored in Great Britain, according *o the latest advices received by Mr. *JF. C. Wade, Agent-General for British Columbia in London. That the British-Government has confidence In the (accuracy of this estimate is indicated "by the plans-it has adopted'for financing the great national housing campaign now under way. .Almost 1,000,000 homes for working people are needed in the United Kingdom; "Housing congestion during the ~war. and since has constituted one of. aSngland's serious internal problems. 'To'insure adequate building of work- Ingmen's homes the government has liberally subsidized the building in- ulttstry.' This£ subsidy is variously applied to private building, building by isocieties and communty bulding. The «even years estimate figures in the /cosmiunity housing subsidy. British local authorities are, by the nnew Housing Act, made directly responsible for the housing of workers ^in their respective communities. They are required to estimate the number of houses needed in their districts and ~t» provide them for renting so far as "they will not be provided by other /agencies. Local communities will %«ar the cost up to a liability not exceeding the returns from a tax levy a* the rate of one shilling on the I«mnd sterling. The excess costs, if ~weB]r, and the deficits incurred throu^n law rental plans and depreciated valuations will be met by a government --grant. Because construction costs are con- GETS CONTRACT FOR NEW f HOME TO COST $14,500 Architects Gillingham & Korner, 1502 Tower building, who; some time ago were commissioned by Mr. J. Graham to prepare plans for a handsome new home on Shaughnessy Heights, have just awarded the contract for the erection of this fine residence to Mr. S. J. Newitt, 954 Seventeenth Avenue, west. The residence is to be a two-story structure of hollow tile, with three reception rooms downstairs, a large kitchen and a cloak room, all on the ground floor. It will have a full concrete basement and will be heated with a hot -water plant as well as two fireplaces. Hardwood floors will be laid' throughout. The second floor will be laid out with four bed rooms and two bath rooms. The new home will cost approximately $14,500. _: WANT PLANS PREPARED FOR A NEW CITY HALL Providing the city council approves of a motion of which notice was given by Aid. Reid last Monday, the city building inspector^ will be asked to prepare plans and submit estimates for a combined city hall and library building to be erected on the site of the present antiquated structure." The rhotionwill come up for discussion at the next meeting of the council next week, but it is known there is a considerable diversity of opinion among the aldermen regarding the advisabil- ty of utilizing any of the present city hall building or rebuilding on tne present site. It is also understood-that the agreement with the Garnegie Foundation Corporation under which the city was presented with the present Carnegie Library building prevent it being used for any but library purposes. STEEL PLANT GOING,UP Good progress is being made on the erection of the new wire cable and steel" plant for the Britannia & Steel Company on Industrial Island. The Dominion Construction Company, which has the contract for the erection of the main factory building, have a large force of men at work and the building is fast- taking shape. Some of the machinery has arrived from the east and is being installed. 23091- 23092- 23003- 2309-1- NAIL MILLS INCREASE OUTPUT; NO SHORTAGE NOW PITTSBURG—By increasing their producti&n of hails fifteen; per cent., steel mills in the Pittsburg district have eliminated fear of a shortage. Building booms in New York and other large cities have drawn heavily upon the nail supply, and builders for the immediate future of Pittsburg contractors took up the question with the mills, and full speed ahead was ordered, with the result that production soon overtook consumption, and authorities now say, there is enough nails for all building in sight. feared their work. isiflered to be higher now than they C0PPER MOUNTAIN MILL ~w111 be in future, local authorities are TO START ABOUT AUGUST 1 authorized to. place their valuations „„„,.„_,™~x. „ r> -m , ». . .
