NEW MODEL COMMUNITY.
KERR1SDALE.—The prospect of the
construction of 200 houses, on a community plan on the west side of Granville Street, south of Shaughnessy
Heights, it is stated by Reeve Fletcher, has already shown its effects in
increased activity in that neighborhood. The necessary accommodations
which the municipality, would have to
put in for such a block of houses, the
Reeve states, would not be great, as
the *water has already been laid on.
The sewers would cause by far the
greatest outlay. The Reeve is greatly
interested in the project, and has been
quietly investigating it since its inception some weeks ago.

MORE SHIPS MAY BE BUILT
AT POPLAR ISLAND YARDS,
There is still nothing definite regarding further contracts for wooden
ships, according to H. M. Fullerton, of
the New Westminster Construction &
Engineering Company, but the company is still optimistic of receiving
orders from private sources to follow
the completion of the four I. M. B.
vessels allotted to the Poplar -Island
yard. Sixty men were laid off there
this week, but there are still four
hundred employed.
TACOMA SHIPBUILDING IS .
I LAUDED BY FEDERAL OFFICIAL.
TACOMA, Wash. — Dr. Charles
Eaton, of the service bureau of the
Emergency Fleet Corporation, said,
after making an inspection of Tacoma
shipyards, that he had not inspected
finer plants anywhere. , ,
tively little is known of the industry
by the average citizen. At the present
time, according to'C. V. Ericsson, 701
Arctic Building, who makes a specialty
of dealing in this product or the forest,
there are about 60 wooden vessels under construction in Seattle yards averaging from 2,500 to 3,500 tons each.
About 300 knees will be used in each
vessel, making a total of from 1S.000
to 20,000 knees needed for vessels under way. The cost of these knees to
the shipbuilder will average about ?15
each, so that the total amount invested
in knees alone for the present work
under way is approximately $270,000.
Large quantities of these knees are
also shipped from, this district to the
East.

Transformers borrowed by the British Columbia .government from the
French Complex Ore Reduction Company at Nelson will probably be returned, it is said, and that if this is
clone a plant will be at once installed
at Nelson for treating manganese ore.
Heclley Gold Mines Co., has reduced its quarterly dividend from $50,000
to $36,000, payable March 30. This is
a reduction from 50 cents to 30 cents
a share. With the payment of the
coming dividend the grand total of
disbursements will be $2,339,520.
F. R. Wolfe, president of the Florence, operating at Ainsworth, recently stated in Spokane that he thought
the lead situation in B. C. was .clearing. He employs 40 men at mill and
mine and has shipped over 200 tons
to Trail this year.
