The new '■-till which grants incorporation■ to- the association of professional engineers ■end thereby providers protection to the .-.- public from incompetent persons prac- iising under that guise, is conceded to l»e a better act than one recently passed in Alberta, and fully as good and perhaps better in some respects -ban a similar bill recently enacted in "the, Manitoba legislature. It covers in -__re scope of membership provided, -' civil,' mining','. ifteahanica^, . electrical, i sefcemical and >_trii^t"tiral 'engineering. STbis is conceded to cover the profes- _uod pretty thoroughly for the present. The new bill is to become law oh April 1,. 1921, which period is declared "1© lie ample time for the proper regis- taUon of all professional engineers ato all parts: of the province, as the "anembership of the association now --extends to all sections of British Columbia. Although the association of ^professional engineers now has fa "membership of 450 and a good bank ^balance to show for its first year of '■existence, there are still a .consider- mble number of engineers in the more ^remote parts of, the province who are "a_ott;yet members. The great majority of these, providing they are duly qualified, will naturally come into the mem- "Ibership ranks now that official recognition has been granted the profession ^TJnder the provisions of the bill, exceptions are allowed in the case of •those engaged in inter-provincial "work, but in these cases, again, protection is afforded the B. C, engineers T»y similar acts which will seen be in _torce in the adjacent provinces. The organization work and efforts ••which resulted in the passing of this IjiH has cost the association $1800, and there has also been other heavy .rancidental expenses, but the members »r this hitherto unprotected profession -will, no doubt, consider the money -•well spent in the satisfactory results -"that have been achieved. Under the circumstances there was justifiable ground for the joyful mutual congratulation among the en gineers indulged in at the annual meeting of the British Columbia Technical Association last Wednesday, when Prof. E. Snodgrass were unanimously re-elected president and secretary, respectively, by acclamation, and the gathering concluded.with an enjoyable banquet in the Citizens' Club. At this banquet all the members united in showering well-deserved encomiums on the legislative 5 committee,, headed by Mr. H. I*. Robertson, to whose efforts are largely due the passage of the bill in practically its original form. Mr. Robertson especially, on whose shoulders much of the actual lobbying devolved, came in for the lion's share pf congratulations, and he deserved them as richly as he modest- f ly accepted them.
