"Recent tests to determine the relative value of different roads show the resistance to tractive effort offered, by unsui faced concrete to be thirty pounds per ton, surfaced concrete fifty pounds, gravel eighty-two pounds and dirt roads ninety-nine pounds," says R. fi. Chamberlain, truck sales manager of the Packard Motor Car Company. ' "Using a throe-ton truck with a capacity load and a speed of twelve miles an hour over unsurfaced concrete as standard, the truck will make 7.2 miles per hour over surfaced concrete, 4.8 miles per ,hour over gravel and 3.6 miles over dirt roads. This makes a relative cost, of $0,167, $0,194, $0,207 per ton-mile in the last three cases. "Northern Ohio clearly shows the development of intercity motor truck hauling. Several months 'ago a traffic census on the Cleveland-Akron Highway proved that goods were being hauled over that road in motor trucks equivalent in tonnage to one freight carload" an hour. Since then trucking '-over'this route has been increased substantially. MAKES A GOOD BUY. The Rosenthal Furniture Company of Fort Worth, Tex., will never again consider wagons and horses for hauling. The reason is that the company has discovered that moving its freight by a Maxwell truck is quicker and cheaper. The truck is taking the place of two teams. OWN 80,000 MOTORS. - Having acquired nearly 45,000 cars in the last year, the farmers of Pennsylvania , apparently are not particular about their horses, and figures made public by the state agricultural department show that there are now 577,877 horses on the farms compared with 590,087 a year ago. The highway department's figures show that there are 80,000 motor cars' on Pennsylvania farms, the figures including trucks and all other cars. If there is any lingering doubt on the part of government officials of the value of the motor car, this experiment might be tried: Take every motor car away from every department and branch of the government for one day. The next day- the motor. car~-«??oiiId have ceased to be a non-essential for ail time.'—Motor Life." i • i ♦ I'***-: * i;♦ i»l • i ♦ i . i»i»i '• I MIKING. | - Since January 1st eight "Washington mines have sent a trifle over 2000 tons of ore to Trail smelter. Monday night a small fire broke out at, the H. *& H.roasters at the Trail smelter, with small loss. ,For the first time this year the I Highland, of Ainsworth, is on the Trail smelter shipping list with 84 tons of ore. * / "To date" in 1918" "just 50 different properties have shipped ore or concentrates to the.
