The fact that the re-, turned men did not call off the trip to "Victoria but instead went down in force to insist upon a clear-cut state- mentment of policy from the government concerning future appointments to government positions shows that they meant business in regard to tffe originally planned purpose. In Major Retallack, the government has appointed a man who, while he may not possess the immediate per- tion accounting. THE NEW PUBLIC UTILITIES ■ COMMISSIONER In the appointment of Major John X. Retallack as public utilities commissioner for B. C, there will be general, satisfaction felt by more than the returned men whose nominee he •was for the post. Satisfaction will also be felt over'the appointri*ient by the officers and members of the British Columbia Technical Union that a man with proper technical training and qualification* has been named for this responsible post, in line with the recommendations^, made to tne government to that effect by the executive of the Union. Following the veritable' '•tempest in a teapot" which resulted. from the first announcement'of the intention of the government to appomt Mayor Gale as the Commissioner, the Great War Veterans :as well as practically all other returned soldier organizations, voiced and wired strong protests to Premier Oliver as well as other members of the cabinet. That the returned men were really aroused over the evident' intention to appoint Mayor Gale was quite clear at the mass meeting on Good Friday on Memorial Square, when steps were taken to send a big delegation of about 300 war veterans to" interview the government last Tuesday. The fact that the re-, turned men did not call off the trip to "Victoria but instead went down in force to insist upon a clear-cut state- mentment of policy from the government concerning future appointments to government positions shows that they meant business in regard to tife originally planned purpose. In Major Retallack, the government has appointed a man who, while he may not possess the immediate personal knowledge of local conditions tion accounting. With these qualifications he should be able to satisfactorily fill the bill until next spring when it is probable that two more commissioners will be appointed and Hie scope and powers of the board considerably enlarged. TWO NEW MILLS. Kamloops.—The Hanbury Lumber Company, which has interests from Regina .to Vancouver, and some years ago purchased valuable.timber limits near Cherry Creek and Notch Hill, are arranging to construct two saw mills, one at each place, with complete equipment that will run into nearly a, quarter of a million dollars and employ from 200 to 300 men.
