In all their dealings the owner and' contractor will' be :more nearly on a footing of equality. Finally the open competition "with, the friendly association which it involves, naturally tends to make Business life a little better worth living. WHY ARE CONTRACT PRICES KEPT SO SECRET? "Why is it that contract prices of construction jobs - are kept so secret, -whilst retail prices are plainly niark- «d in the windows for everybody to -jread and published in the newspapers in the biggest type that space will -^permit? Because of lack of co-operation between contractors and builders and also owing to the fact that they, are ^competing on a false basis which they 3think is fair, but which in reality is -^distinctly unfair to tli'e members of ■the building and contracting trades. This basic fact and-'other closely Mco-related facts arej! becoming more '-sand more apparent to all thinking .men engaged in the building trade, -^especially since, the' abnormal postwar, conditions has rendered co-opera- :*jon more than ever necessary. cTo ^revert again ,to, the secret prices on vconstruction jobs as compared with '^widely published retail prices; It can: anot be because competition is keener in contracting than it is in the retail trade. We know that it is not. We ml*o know that in no line is it as keen -«8 in the retail trade. In the manu- iZacturing and contracting world the wAC discredited policy prevails. Each :anaa seems mortally afraid that his competitor will find out what he is sasring. Most of them have.. as many jprice3 as they have customers. They a price but like the oriental, they ready to take almost anything offered and when the "deal is closed they «re always sorry that they" did not Utold out for a better price. It is all a ^gamble and is demoralizing, to all concerned. .'■."'. '•'.■,:■"'.; j "There are three prices: secret, fixed ■mad open, -the secret price Is the mark *of the old or.false competition. The Sixed price i3 illegal and is the mark "^ol suppressed competition. The open .gprice is the new, true competition. The man who asserts his right to quote secretly such prices as he pleaa- «*es—asserts his right to demoralize a •trade as he pleases, That right does. aiot exist; he is a trade a'narchist. "With open competition the wide spread of prices is lessened. There is Hess bidding below cost and fewer or aio exceptionally high bids. The cus- -lomer is surer of fairer treatment in the long run and the bidder of fairer 3»Tices. This has been assured through the purchase" by the association of a ?6-acre tract for the new factory which will not only afford good grazing facilities for a herd of dairy cows, but als6 has a water right on the Sumas river. Ten of the 26 acres were purchased from the DeLair Bros., and sixteen acres located on the opposite side of the Sumas Road from F. McCrimmon. The latter purchase carries with1 it a water rfght on the river. It is expected that plans will "be prepared shortly for the new milk condensing factory which will also have a department equipped for the manufacture of powdered milk.
