C. lumber in particular, that the Canadian lumber trade will experience some difficulty in securing its share of orders for reconstruction work in Europe unless more attention is paid to the requirements of the overseas market. It is pointed out by the Commission that lumber from Russia and. Sweden con cerned," says the official statement, "the bulk of lumber heretofore imported by the United Kingdom has been in the form of large timbers of the grade known as merchantable, for heavy structural work, or for re- sawing into any size. If iBritish Columbia is to enlarge her timber trade, then a range of all grades and sizes, including merchantable, but not of the lowest grades must be dealt in." "If Canada," the report continues, "can deliver lumber of the various grades sawn to British standards at Swedish prices, then she can do business in a broad and general way." This, it is pointed out by leading British Columbia lumbermen, is practically impossible with freight rates at'their present high level. But in two years or less freight rates may be low enough for Canada to compete with Sweden arid Russia, provided we manufacture to the requirements of the British markets. . While J this is a hopeful outlook, it means that unless: the B. C. lumbermen are prepared to sacrifice some of their profits, Sweden and Russia may get has been awarded to Robert Mon- crieff, the well known contractor, at a figure of approximately $130,000. GOODS Plans are now being perfected by an energetic committee from the city council and B. C Manufacturers' Association for the holding of a big exhibit of ,all commodities made in the province. It is proposed to hold the fair some time within the next two months, and it will , probably last at least two weeks. It is proposed to hold the fair in the Arena or Horse Shw building, preferably the former, as it will be available then, and have all lines of building material and contractors' supplies that are made in the province, thoroughly represented at the fair. Further details of the proposed fair are to be discussed at a general meeting of all organizations interested to be held in the city hall next Tuesday evening. BUSINESS ITEMS THE IRON AGE. The opinion is general in the steel trade that the reduced prices announced by the Industrial (Board at Washington on March 20 will bring out in the near future a moderate amount of new business, most of which buyers have held up since the stabilizing movement loomed up six. weeks ago. The reductions range from $'1.25 per ton on pig iron and $5 on billets to $10 on standard rails, and amount to ?7 per net. ton on plates, shapes, bars, wrought pipe, sheets and tin plate and to $5 on wire, wire nails, hoops and light rails. Eastern bar iron makers have met the reduction on steel bars, dropping their price^ from $2.90 to $2.35, Pittsburgh. PROVINCIAL NOTES. News comes from Vanderhoof that a good deal of building is being planned and a considerable amount is .going on at the present time. A lire at Vernon last week .destroyed the 'office and part of the warehouse of the branch of the Do-; 'minion Canners. The total loss will prabjibjy , amount...toI .about..$10,000.
