MOTOR TRUCKS SPEED BUSINESS DELIVERIES "With the use of motor-trucks, business concerns are delivering two and three loads in the time it formerly took teams to deliver one," says W. L. I-Iughson of the Kissel Kar. "Yesterday horse-time was fast; to- !day it is behind time. It is not the money saved, but the money made that *ls forcing horses into the discard. The rapid growth of cities and towns, the expansion of the suburbs and the building up of the country have put long distance between' supply and demand. "Today's hurry-up orders', demand the hurry-up ability of the motor truck. Hauling contracts demand living ,up to the time limit. The firm that is not equipped to meet these demands pays a penalty by forfeiting the profits from the increased, business-getting and busines-conserving ability of mo- I tor trucks. ("Horse delivery means neigiroorhood •patronage for the retailer. It has ■proved that with the motor truck equipment business concerns can extend their territory and increase their trade area. 'They ship more goods in less time. That is .why they are sup- Lancaster, Pa., to New York City. The run of 180 miles was covered by a regular parcel post truck, loaded with 'eggs, butter, honey and day-old chicks, 'in actual running time of ten hours between the two points. This brings within a daily shipment of New York City all farms with a radius of 180 miles. In telling of the trip at a dinner of the Motor Truck Club, New York, Fourth. Assistant Postmaster General Blakeslee declared that this event was the first time in the history of the country, by" freight, express or mail that a shipment had been made from producer to the consumer in one day over a distance of more than 100 miles. They are in the express business in Salem, N. J. plying three customers tortheir former one, and practically treble their business on' the same delivery cost and are, in addition, giving.their customers the final word in service." MORE WAR CONTRACTS SOON. * WASHING-TON—The .ordnance department soon w"ll let contracts for 20,000 four-wheel-drive and 12,000 Nash ! trucks. It is said that these contracts will not be split up, but instead "will be divided between two or three of the largest companies. Heavy freighting by T. L.. Gordon, of. 1009 Harrison St., in Amarlllo, Tex.,, is now being performed by means, of trucks. Recently Gordon ditched his -four wagons, which were each drawn by ' four horses, for Maxwell trucks. "My trucks average 3,000 pounds to a load and make from 100 to 165 miles a day," declares Gordon.
