IS ".'. TRAINED TECHNICAL MAN NEEDED FOR POST Trite and timely indeed is the action taken by the British Columbia1 Technical Union;in forwarding a protest to Premier Oliver urging that the ap- .pointee for Public Utilities Commissioner be a man possessed of the necessary technical training and experience to cope with the extensive variety of matters which will come under his purview. In-fact',' it is regrettable in view of the palable. effort to make this office a political1; .plum, that such action on the part of the B. C. Technical Union was not taken sooner. Had the protest been sent in about the time the provincial house opened and the action followed by a campaign; of publicity and education directed towards pointing out the Adkison & Dill GENERAL CONTRACTORS Specialists In Reinforced Concrete 325 litre St. Sey. 3768- BV.B2II hundred and one reasons why a technically trained man should be appointed, there would probably liave been fewer politically prominent possibilities mentioned for the post. As it is, it may nh be too late at that, for while it was almost an open secret a few weeks ago that a certain prominent city official was likely to be named for the job, it is now understood "that, the members of the provincial executive have had a considerable change of heart as a result of the pertinent facts that have been called to their attention by the 13. C: Technical Union and other bodies interested In seeing real merit and qualification • rather than political pull and favoritism, taken into prime consideration in making the appointment. As pointed put by the B. C. Technical Union, it is more than ever necessary, since the Public Utilities Act only provides for one commissioner, to have the position filled by a man who has been trained in a broad way to deal with technical matters. For in carrying out his duties, the commissioner will''be confronted at every angle by experts who will try to convince him of their way of thinking, and unless the man appointed has the necessary technical qualifications, the administration of this important new office will be farcial, and the public would naturally soon begin to feel doubtful about their interests being safeguarded. COMPANY OPENS CITY OFFICE Mr. P. A. Jones, manager of the Fraser River Pile Driving Company, has opened a branch office of that organization in the city in order to better cope with the increased business offering. The new office is in the Metropolitan building, S37 Hastings street, west, where orders will be taken for all'kinds-of wharf repairing, bridge building and general pile driving.
