TRUCK BEATS FAST FREIGHT TRAIN In making a recent 533-mile trip overland from New York to Akron, 0., in sixty hours, total time, and in forty- nine hours' actual running time, a loaded^'1-2-ton Mack truck beat the fastest Pennsylvania Railroad freight delivery by forty-eight hours. SERVES COAL COMPANY. A motor truck is proving its worth delivering ice and coal for the Southern Ice & Utility Company of Paris, Texas. It is in use ten hours a day and haa replaced four horses and does the work-in half the time formerly needed. MAKES GOOD MILEAGE' Though the Athens Pottery Company's truck makes an average of forty stops ,a day, it makes an average of eighteen miles on a gallon of gas. It is used in hauling stoneware. The Maxwell also runs about forty miles a day. NO AUTOMOBILE EMBARGO. Ottawa Government Declares it Has Taken No Action in the Matter. OTTAWA—Large numbers of telegrams have been received here asking if tho government, has placed an embargo on Americanautomobiles to take effect^ on April 15. No such action, it is stated authoritatively, has been taken'' by the cabinet. OVERLOADING SOLID TIRES. v * To 'hosts of truck 'drivers, solid tires are 'apparently nothing more than chunks of rubber fastened to. the wheels—what can hurt them? They wilLf-wear out in course of time any- wayrsowhy bother to look after them? Rubber .Co., Akron/Ohio. These big tires look so sturdy and rugged that they do not appear to need any special care. Butf ideas like this have cost the motor truck tire users of the country a vast sum of money in the aggregate. The severity of the performance demanded of a non-pneumatic truck tire usually more than makes up for its lack of delicacy, so that 'reasonable care with a truck tire is just as essential as with a motor car tire. . • Overloading is one of the great abuses visited upon truck tires. In many cases . overloading is intentional, but in the majority of instances the practice is carried on unknowingly or carelessly. The result is the same in either case. The overstrain soon breaks down the tire before its appointed time. A solid truck tire will enduse a certain strain andrnot-a bit more than that. When rubber is compresed to a certain point its compressibility ceases and any pressure beyond'that point causes the rubber particles to crack and separate from each other, and the tire is weakened so that it becomes niore susceptible-to.common injuries. The life is crushed out of the tire and it never resumes it former resiliency. Overloading, of course, is only one of the abuses to which truck tjres are commonly subjected, but it is'the most prevalent.- Overloading is .bound to increase, the cost of operation greatly and while the tires are wearing away abnorma:iy,.the truck itself is depreciating at an unreasonable rate. If yon must overload your truck, equip it with oversize tires when your old ones wear out. They will be far more economical 'in the.end.—Goodyear Tire & 7n£$aa*ca£&r*J!K2E23e5a«^.iis^ f- /""pRUXTUN is the way out of the hauling * 1 problem—the easy way, the economical way, *u -u„* «rflv the satisfactory way.
