Civic building inspector Jarret's report tor the month of June shows that
11   permits   were   issued   for   a   total
I valuation    of    ?42,720,    as    compared
with the same month last year when
57   permits   weie   gi anted  amounting
to ?44.S95.    The total permits tor the
six months of the current year number 204 with a total aggregating $ (34,-
050.     For   the   first   six   months   of
1915,   3l12   permits   were   issued   with
a tot.U value of ?1,0(1G,96G     The Dominion   Govt,   grain   elevator   is   included  in  the latter, which  accounts
for the difference.
It is announced by the sewerage
board that construction on the proposed Stanley Park interceptor cannot be started for several months
owing to the fact that the necessary
equipment is being used on the Hastings Park section and will not be
available until that  time.

The sawlogs scaled in the various

Present conditions have also necessitated more and larger hospitals, the ic-  sult beintf an unusuallv large increase  for hosoitals nrul charities. Last year  $16,000 was voted in the way of assistance in the construction of hospitals.  This year about $150,000 will piobably  "be granted for that puipose. Grants to  refuge homes, aid societies, etc, is increased  from   $19,000  to  $80,000.  , University of B,  C.  Among the appropriations In this  year's estimates is a conditional one of  $200,000 for the University of Uritis'h  Columbia. Last year's . estimate was  $175,000. .Included In the works and  buildings to be constructed by the Public Works Department are the following; Okulla prison farm, $15,000;  improvement of government reserve,  Burnaby, $10,000; mental hospital and  colony farm. E.ssondalc, $35,000; provincial government buildings, London <Vbm-  pletlon and maintenance), $175,000:  provincial normal school. Vancouver,  maintenance, $8,000. The appropriations  for roads, streets, bridges and wharves  in each constituency are the same as  last year. Cliilllwnck gets $.,3,300:  Delta, $22,500; Dewdnny, $6S.5fl(), and  Richmond $10,000. Eighty thousand is  Devoted-for Kingsway through the .Municipality of Burnaby. Point Grey gets  $10,000 for roads, and Nit-omen Island  ♦he same amount for dyking; $13,500 Is a  subsidy for the Ladner-Woodward feri-y.  The vote of $100,000 on last year's  estimates for the Second Narrows bridge  is left off. For bridges generally $450,-  • 00 Is sot down, while for the bridge  •ver the Fraser River at Prince George  there will be an appropriation of $150,-  600.  An item in the Land Department appropriations is that for $20,000 for  "timber testing and investigation of  wood products." An indication that the  government intends to continue seeking  overseas markets for the R. C. lumber  trade is that another $50,000 is appropriated for salaries, tra\elling expenses,  and purchase of material.  \.    Other Appropriations.  Among the other appropriations are  tho   following:  Grant to B. of steel and asbestos, crosslald galvanized iron of two thicknesses, with
air spaces and asbestos lining 1-16th Inch thick pre-ients warping. Much
lighter than any other standard Fire Door.    Weight only 5 lbs. per square
foot.    Can be installed in any manner that other Fire Doors are Installed	
sliding, swinging, vertical, etc.—Latest approved hardware and trimmings
used.
