Yv'k .reprint the following from a recent issue of the Vancouver Pro- vinck, which speaks for itself and requires no comment : " Instructions have been issued from Victoria, iu consequence of the recent visit of Premier Duns- iiinir to Atlin, requesting Gold Commissioner J. 1). Graham to cancel certain walerpower rights on various Pf Atlin creeks. On Willow creek and other .places, in which Mr. Thomas Dunn and other local capitalists are interested, work has been very , much impeded this summer because of water rights granted further up the creeks to other persons, and the result is that, while partial cleanups have been satisfactory, it has been impossible to get at the real amount ol the returns. When the premier recently visited the district, the position was explained to,him. Earth washed away by the monitors was carried in to the bed of the streams and made it much more difficult for the working^of the creek by ordinary placer methods. As a result, Mr. Irving, an engineer, is now 0:; the way in to arrange for the carrying out of a reform." By telegram, dated the 25th inst, Mr. J. D. Graham received instructions to allow the Sunrise water lo be turned on, but, at the eleventh hour, when men, seeing no immediate prospect of accomplishing anything further this year, have pulled out and lett camp, the news comes too late, and the damage done, both to tlie individuals and to the camp, is .such as cannot be easily repaired. The presumable 'policy of every government, "the greatest good to the greatest number," seems to have been sadly overlooked in this instance. The government has gain, and Atlin has lost much by interference or furtherance strictly personal ends. NEWS OF THE WEEK Some Important Deals Consummated. - The Consolidated Spruce Creek Placers Co. If lhe record the Atlin Camp has made for. itself in having 1,00 much /law.'V is held in abeyance in this instance, jt is safe to predict that a scene of the greatest activity for many y.ears tp corne yy'd'i be ours. Jt wpuld be impossible to predict what that disr covery will produce buj. the indicarj lions as described to i*s suggest that 'mere words and figures woulf}.' npt convey any idea pf a tithe of the richness pf the find. Some weeks ago it was announced in these columns that Capt. Martin of Spruce creek had sold out his interests on that creek to the Consolidated -Spruce Creek' Placers Co., Ltd., ol Seattle. This week the .Company has acquired, two and a half miles of the creek, from the falls up, and, about 600 acres of valuable bench ground. Most of this bench ground has been'prospected and has been proved to be highly auriferous. By the acquirement of the creek leases ample dumping ground has been secured. It is understood that satisfactory arrangements have been made.for water privileges, and that surveys, levels, etc., would indicate thatihe Company's prospects for successful hydraulic operations cannot be beat in the district. The Manager, Mr. W. M. Brook, accompanied by Mr. C. L- Black- more, ot California, the Company's Mining Engineer, left on Thursday for the outside. The necessary arrangements will be made during the winter towards securing and shipping in the most complete hydraulic plant which money* can buy and.it is anticipated that work will be in active operation early next summer. In conversation with Mr. Black- more, we learn that from the developments carried out this summer, under his direction, it is his opinion that the Company has acquired property on .Spruce the prospects of which are away beyond his most sanguine expectations. Mr. Black- more is a comparatively young man, but before the ground owned and acquired is all piped out, he will be old and gray. The Stevendyke Hydraulic Partnership, which had considerable interest in the property acquired by the Consolidated Co., has traded all its interest on Spruce creek to the Company, and they now become entirely separate and distinct propositions, with no conflict- tjng interests between them. Messrs. Prank Weir and D. Todd Lees, both well known ". stayers" of the pamp control ^he Stevendyke and its consolidations on Pine. It is to be regretted that the closing dpwn of the Sunrise ditch prevented the Stevendyke Company from realizing 011 their hard season's work just when the pay was in sight. The pay on bedrock, from panning, goes asliigh as $5 to the pan, and the gold is very coarse. When the 'water was shut down, the pit was cleaned out and a cut of about ten fee! made in front of the upper box, when the bedrock' was uncovered, about two feel below the level of the sluice, .ll was intended to have made a dean-np, but beyond .'possibly one or two riffle scis,' this will be left over until spring. Work is now being begun upon the construction of an ijniiien.se flume to curry the high water next year, so as to protect the workings from damage by the flood. This will entail an outlay of several thousaikl dollars, but it is deemed absolutely necessary and advisable. ' There is now no question but this Company will be on a big revenue producing basis from the commencement of operations next season, as the experimental stage is passed and a pay channel, almost without a peer in the country, is exposed aiid ready to give up its gold to man's enter- . prise.
