I'liUI'lllKTOII. ./a.mi'..s Suirmis, -Manackk. Saturdav, Nov. 26, 1904. . The citizens of-Atliu have a duty to perform tonight which is of the utmost inipoitauce to every one living in this cam p. Fortunately, we have been exempt from fires such as other Northern camps have suffered from, but the pioneers of this district can .never forget the experience of 1900, when the B. A. * C. property and all the adjacent building were .wiped out by lire on a Sunday afternoon. The fires which have, occurred since then have only been isolated instances, which have not served to excite the community 10 a sense of the danger amidst which they live, and the result has been that our local lure Brigade is not upheld as it ought to be. Tonight the citizens are called upon to appoint one of their number to make it his boun'deu duty to watch and ward against the danger of fires and who will be capable if occasion arises to handle the work in an efficient manner. It requires no far-sightedness on the part of the intelligent population of Atliu to know that from amongst themselves they can select a man perfectly capable of performing the duties, if they are prepared to encourage him to do so. For the last five years a volunteer fire chief has been appointed, but it cannot be expected that a man who has got another business to attend to can devote his time and attention to the important duties of guarding the town from fire. We hope there will be a good attendance of the citizens tonight to show their interest in the matter. Rev. Thos. Jenkins of Ketchikan was shanghaied from that place on the City of Seattle'on one of her south-bound trips last month. He boarded the steamer to see some friends. When the parting whistle blew he hurried, on deck, but the boat had left the wharf. To all his pleadings to be reumied to land, the captain informed him it was impossible. . Rev. -Mr. Jenkins now prays that the com t award him such a sum as it sees fit, as balm lo his wounded feelings and recompense for the personal outlay which the unexpected and unde'sired ocean voyage entailed. A Hot Fire Meeting. " It was worth.a dollar to be at that meeting," was the comment of one citizen, on the steps of the Court'House after the fire meeting held last Saturday evening. The meeting itself was representative, the Court House being crowded to the doors, even the members of the Chinese Reform Association being' ' present. The meeting got qpiickly down to business and several fluent speeches , were delivered by our leading citizens. Mr. Stables, president of the Board of Trade, was voted to the chair. Rev. V. L. Stephenson acting iis secretary. The chaiiman, in opening, gave a clear and concise statement of the reasons for calling the meeting, and of the importance of the question of fire protection. On the motion of Capt! Hathorn, the secretary read letters from the four following ap-j plicauts for the position of Fire I Chief: Capty R. C. Damon, at $25 per month ; W. J. Smith, formerly fire chief'of the Inverness, Scotland, Fire Brigade ; Win. Bar trim, for several winters fire chief of the Volunteer Fire Brigade at Quesnel; and Bob. Webster,'who 'is well known in this DistricL- . The financial aspect oi the-i>osi- tion was.then considered, and in 1 answer to enquiries, the secretary stated that $4.8 was subscribed by the merchants and business houses and $25 by the Government towards the paying of the salary of the night watchman and towards incidental expenses, and that private residents contributed practically nothing to the Fire Fund, and incidentally pointed out that a majority of the fires hi.d occurred in private houses, and suggested that if the householders were asked to subscribe, they would, he believed, respond willingly. Thissuggesticu was enlarged upon by Di. Young, and on a motion by our Sheriff, new subscribers were called upon to contribute to the Fire Fund. The motion was received with applause by the old subscribers, and a list was passed around and $16 more per month was assured. At this junction an amusing suggestion was made by Mr. Beavis, who evidently does not believe in direct taxation, and was to the effect that the merchants pay the salary of the fire chief and charge it indirectly through their sales. This was received with tumultuous applause, in which the chairman heartily joined. The Government Agent was heard, amidst the jing- . ling of keys, to state that the Government had authorized him to grant to the fund an amount equal- i ling one-half of the sum subscribed: . by the citizens, but not exceeding: > $40. fao,was therefore assured. It was then proposed thai, a cora- . mittee be appointed to solicit subscriptions from non-present residents, and the chairman, empowered bv a resolution, appointed a ' committeeDad' Feiin. A. R. McDonald, George Sinclairfor that purpose. On the motion of Dr. Young, a resolution was passed combining the position of night watchman and fire chief at a salary of $100 per month. In discussing the powei enjoyed by the night watchman, acting as special constable, the citizens iin some pointed speeches made it clearly to be understood thai the riotoiis conduct indulged iu at times by the devotees of Bacchus lnr le- sliained by the officials. The business concluded by a motion by Mr. Eraser that a meeting of all subscribers be held on Saturday, the 26U1, to appoint fiom among the candidates a Fire Chief and Night Watchman.
