The simplification of home life through invention and manufacture, the growth of large cities with their popular education, and above all the division of labor, have given her a free place in the active world. This fact is the distinctive feature of these ages. To a distant and universal historian a historian who writes the lives of the peoplethat change in the position of women will .appear, not only the most striking, but the most excellent achievement of ours. For we will never evolve a heroic race of people on the earth until we give them a twofold inheritance and tradition of active, intelligent virtue. That.we have begun to do. And no act at the present time can more urge and certify this great atep in the history of life than to give it a political expres sion und guarantee Citizenship will rouse and educate women, it will de velop our ideal of them; therefore, it 1b a dominant necessity of advancing civilization that they have it.-The North American Review. Happy Marriage Recipe The experience of a married couple who have lived together for. 70 years in New York without a quarrel pos sesses a practical value which outweighs any amount of theorising. "We just loved each other, and that was all there was to it," said the wife when asked the secret of the couple's hap piness. But the true recipe seems to be contained in the husband's remark that "he minded his own business while she tended to her own affairs." In this simple policy of non-interference is comprised all the philosophy not only of happy marriages, but of har monious human relations in the broader sense. A general application of the policy is all that is needed to make marriage a blessing, and not a curse. TAKING A COLLEGE COURSE "Mother, may I go out to school, Go to a woman's college? For every girl goes as a rule, To gather special knowledge. She goes away from friends and home With all her gems and laces, The halls and campuses to roam And other classic places." "What! Would you go away to school? Would you my little daughter, There to drink at the knowledge pool, . Of wisdom's sparkling water? Would you sit there at night alone, Over your studies poring, Making the ancient lore your own, In all your classes scoring?" "Why, mother, mother, how you talk Of lore and stuff and knowledge! Just in the classic halls I'd walk Of some swell woman's college; There I would wear the college pin And as the gay year passes, Through all the games and spreads I'd spin And not go near the classes!" HOUSEHOLD HINTS To Iron Shirtwaists Iron the collar band first on the right side, then on the wrong, till perfectly dry. Next turn the waist inside out and lay it on the board with the back down; the right side of the waist will be up. Begin to iron between shoulders to collar, across back to sleeves, around neck across shoulder seams toward fronts to about same depth as across back. This gives the right bulge to front of shoulders. Then turn the waist around and iron the remainder of fronts; turn back again and iron remainder of back and under arms. Finally iron a cuff and up on the sleeve opening until almost dry, then turn thc sleeve right side out, finish cuff, and iron sleeve. If you follow these directions thc waist will be right side out when the last sleeve is turned, and will not be wrinkled. S3. I ^ the Daily Optimist .Special to the Optimisti Cobalt, Ont., Jan. 28. -A terrible Btory comes from thc disirict of Gow- ganda. A young trapper named Wilson waa devoured by wolves. His bride of a week almost perished in the snow from exposure and fear. She had insisted u|inn coming with her husband to the district to stand by him in his hours of trial in the search for fortune. He went on a tour of inspection to review the condition of the traps he was I operating but never returned. A friend I of his named Dumont who has come into town tells how he came across a tent containing a number of cooking utensils but no trapper. Realizing that something was amiss he organized a search party and returned to the scene of the tent, making a journey of about seventy miles altogether. On reaching the tent on this occasion they found Mrs. Wilson in a terrible condition. She was suffering from hysteria. Her beautiful chestnut hair was ashen gray. She was a broken spirited and pitiful creature to behold. On being revived she explained incoherently how she had made an effort to get to the settlement when her husband did not return. Without snow- shoes she had made two miles in two days and then losing heart she returned to the tent. With the little food she had in the shack ahe managed to keep alive. The howling of thc wolves at the door almost made her mad. She haa been taken to Gowganda. No trace of Mr. Wilson has been found, and it seems certain that he fell a prey to thc wolves. It will be represented that the bottom will fall out of our existence, and chaos and bankruptcy result. Many who know no better will probably be deceived thereby. Premier McBride in already reported lo have said he regards the treaty as certain lo work immense damage to provincial Industries, agriculture, and tin- railways. "Poultry and eggs and such commodities from the East will be replaced by demands on California, t Iregon and Washington," he says, and holds up his hands in horror at the prospect. This vision of crates of eggs and bales of turkeys and chickens coming into British Columbia without having lo pay heavy tolls to the C. P. K. is a fearful one. It means that we will get more eggs and fresher, more turkeys and latter, while t he English stockholders in the C. P. R. who took $40,- 000,000 in prolits from Canada last year will have to look mournfully out of their club windows in Pall-Mall and reflect that they can get only a ten per cent rake otT on their investments. It is a sad picture. There is only one sadder picture, that is the spectacle of a gathering of Anglo- Saxons in the twentieth century, sitting spell-bound while a politician explains to them that it is a deadly sin to iat tht fruit of a tree which grows six feet to one side ol the 49th parallel, and a virtue to eat the fruit of a tree that grows six feet to the other side; that the way for a community to grow rich is not to eat the things whieh are near at hand, but to place a heavy tax on them, and instead bring stale food products a distance of three thousand miles at great expense, paying lolls to railways and a host of middlemen on the way. The proposals of the Federal Government to place $00,000,000 of food on the free list, directly rebating $7,000,000 of food taxes to the people and reducing thereby the eost of all fund-products is one that can hurt only the corporations, who have all along relied on the tariff to keep people from buying in the natural market under the most favorable circumstances, It will lessen the profits of the corporation leeches, who have been fattening on the people's need for food. It will lessen the prolits of the railway corporation! who heretofore have been able to exact unnecessary tolls for transporting food for the people from a distance. Hui th" people will benefit by cheaper and better food, and trade in general will benefit by trade being permitted to develop along natural channels. The spectacle of Hon. Richard McBride and his satellites preparing to appear in sackcloth and ashes next Wedn isday is one for the gods to laugh al. w w w w ANTED-A Waitress for temporary work Skc<m, ij,n(1 DiatrictDlrtrict ol Queen CharlotU Apply T. Jan. 28.Mr. David Graham Phillips, the author, haa lost his brave fight for life. He died in the Bellevue Hospital, a victim of Fitzhugh Coyle Goldsborough, an eccentric musician, who, although of refined tastes and aristocratic Southern stock, shot the novelist down for a fancied gievancc, and then killed himself. Mr. Phillips waa conscious up to within a quarter of an hour of his death. Although the surgeons did everything in their power the end waa inevitable. It is believed, from some notes in a diary left by Goldsborough, that the assassination was the result of a belief on the part of Goldsborough that Phillips had wronged the American woman in some of his writings. This obsession grew until he shot the man he hated antl sacrificed his own life. It was a curious coincidence that while Mr. Phillips watt breathing his last in the hospital room., a sil, nt pro- i'1'Bsion from a nearby undertakers was carrying the body of his assassin to thc railway station in Jersey City. The casket with its load of tragedy, was put aboard a train at midnight and was shipped to Washington where the young man's remains will be buried. Robert W. Chambers, the novelist, who had been Phillips' closest associate in New York said: i "He was one of the best of men. I was high-minded and true and of thc finest of American writers, best work seemed yet to come, was just finding himself and had struck a vein that promised richly for the future." Mr. Phillips was born in Madison, Ind., in 1867, was a Princeton graduate and unmarried. He was one of the group of story tellers which includes Booth Tarkington, George Ade, Meredith Nicholson, Charles Major and many others. He had written twenty novels, many of the "best sellers" among them, and numerous magazine articles. Ltoaited (Read The Optimist DELIVERED TO ANY ADDRESS IN SECTIONS 1, 5 AND 6 EVERY DAY FOR 50c PER MONTH New York, Jan. 28.Mr. David Graham Phillips, the author, has lost his brave fight for life. He died in the Bellevue Hospital, a victim of Fitzhugh Coyle Goldsborough, an eccentric musician, who, although of refined tastes and aristocratic Southern stock, shot the novelist down for a fancied gievance, and then killed himself. Mr. Phillip-! was conscious up to within a quarter of an hour of his death. Although the surgeons did everything in their power the end was inevitable. It is believed, from some notes in a diary left by Goldsborough, that the assassination was the result of a belief on the part of Goldsborough that Phillips had wronged the American woman in some of his writings. This obsession grew until he shot the man he hated and sacrificed his own life. It was a curious coincidence that while Mr. Phillips was breathing his last in the hospital room., a sil, nt pro- cession from a nearby undertakers was carrying the body of his assassin to the railway station in Jersey City. The casket with its load of tragedy, was put aboard a train at midnight and was shipped to Washington where the young man's remains will be buried. Robert W. Chambers, the novelist, who had been Phillips' closest associate in New York said: "He was one of the best of men. He was high-minded and true and one of the finest of American writers. His best work seemed yet to come. He was just finding himself and had struck a vein that promised richly for the future." Mr. PhillipB was born in Madison, Ind., in 1867, was a Princeton graduate and unmarried. He was one of the group of story tellers which includes Booth Tarkington, George Adc, Meredith Nicholson, Charles Major and many others. He had written twenty novels, many of the "best sellers" among them, andnumerouB magazine articles. - HiB father was David Graham Phillips, a banker. His mother is now living in Los Agneles. Dated Nov. II. 191U. FREDINAND Q. TAI'KRT Tub. Dec. 10 CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 the company felt they could not do better than have her replica operating in the waters of Northern British Clo- umbia for them. Bi-Weekly Service Of course it is possible that she may replace the Beatrice on the run just as the Adelaide has replaced the Charmer on the trip to Victoria, but it is regarded j in shipping circles both in Prince Rupert I and Vancouver that during the summer months at any rate when the trade of the coast is booming with the influx of settlers and the consequent output of material, that both the steamers w'U be run and will form a bi-weekly service in the fame way ils the Prince George and Prince Rupert of the G. T. P. are expected to do. A Steamer Per Day In this way the possibility of a daily service with the south looms promisingly upon the horizon. Wilh the fleets of the G. T. P. the Canadian Pacific, the Canadian Northern, and the Union steamship vessel, the Camosun, there will be seven regular ships making this l>ort with passengers and freight every week. Conditions Improving Of course by the time Ihe promises . of today are realized many changes | may have taken place in the personnel of the coasting boats of the north Pacific but it is not at all likely that whatever alterations may be made they will be I any diminution in the sevice. The forecast is based upon the present conditions, and although the ships may | come and go it is not to be believed I that the circumstances of trade and j commerce will deteriorate, the reverse i order of things being much the more i probable eventuation. Will Make Trade The very fact that these great ship- : ping organizat ions luivi* seen fit to undertake the task of developing the trade ! of the coast of British Columbia Inputting on a service which will be more than adequate for the present demands, is not only a huge advertisement for the Province, it is a stimulant thai will inevitably bring about its own reward BIG FIRE ON THIRD AVENUE CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 covered that it was neither in his own nor in the owner's language. The owner modestly admitted his acquaintance with several tongues. To his mind English was easy, and he spoke it with considerable facility of expression to prove it; French was also easy but the Oriental languages he admitted were hard. He was a worker who had lost practically his alt in the blaze, but it seemed to disturb his "lettered heart" less than the saving of the book. Fire Apparatus Arrives The house belonged to Mr. Haudenschild who with his family took up residence there early in the summer of last year. At the present time he is out of town and knows nothing of his loss. To the energy and thought fulness of his wife he owes what little ihere may be left of the family -Kisscssions. The lire brigade though early on the scene waa not able to do anything to save the building. Two Feel Pressure In the lirst place the men could not get to the seal ol o|>cralions on account of the street being up in lhat particular vicinity. By taking a roundabout route they got within a hundred yards of the fire. Prom there they unwound their hose but when they turned it on the lire the water only squirted about two feet from the nozzle. The sight [was pitiable Io behold. The attempt I was useless. In any case it is quest ion- I able whether any amount of water I would have saved the house by that time. If there ever was a chance however that settled it. In a very short time the wootlen walls of the house fell inwartls with a crash. Electric Plant Danger It was a most fortunate thing lhat lhe morning broke calm antl windless. The new electric power plant was only thirty feet away from the burning house and a breeze might have meant ita utter ruin. The man in charge of the plant awoke with a start when the fire waH at its highest, and in hia own words did not breathe for quite a few minutes with anxiety. He dived into hiB clothes with a speed that put any protean artist to shame, and rushed out to gauge the chances of contagion. And it was with a sense of personal, almost of bodily relief, that he calculated upon the safety of the station. Building Inaured Miss Sophie Haudenschild stated that the house and gear was insured. ' The exact damage is impossible to estimate, but it will cover several thousand dollars. Had a History The house burned down this morning was one ot the oldest in I he Vickersville district. It has known several tenants and was the scene of the first fatal blasting accident on thc townsite when the little boy Nehring last his life when a rock came through the roof. -*" nil Insurance 1 i i Is your HOUSE MEETING OF WAGE WORKER Wage Rate and Labor Condition* Were Discuased At last night's meeting of the Prince Rupert Industrial Association a very large gathering of the wage workers assembled, and strong sympathy was shown with the objects of the association as set forth by their various speakers. In the discussion of the wage rate and conditions of labor in this city arguments were put forward in favor of the increitse demanded. One leading s|ieaker referring to the city council's quest ion regarding t he numerical st rengl h of the association warned his hearers that lhal question betrayed their desire to ingore the demand unless the workers are banded in sufficient strength to enforce it. The call to wage workers one and all to join in swelling the ranks of the association met with appreciative response. A membership roll of a thousand strong is looked for in the near future. All speakers strongly impressedon the assembled workers the great essential that only by uniting can they gain the advantage of improved living conditions they are seeking. TRY THE OPTIMIST WANT AD.
