Barney Mulvaney will leave ih
a few days for the Ingenica with
his pack train. This year he will
go over the new trail now being
cut out by Pete Curran's gang.
James Cronin arrived in Hazelton June 19. coming by way of
Ashcroft, in order to have a look
at the country in general and in
particular some 'and in the Neehaco valley. Operations on the
Dibble group, under bond to Mr.
Cronin, will commence shortly.
A party consisting of cc. Van

H. A. Parker of Chicago, W. K.
McFarlin, New York, and D. D.
Sprague of Princ Rupert, passed
through Hazelton the past week,
coming over the trail from Fort

for Prince Rupert.
Pete Curran and two men left
for the north early in the week
to cut out the new trail to the
Ingenica. It is estimated that
this trail will lessen the distance
to the placer diggings by 65 miles
or more and make it possible to
get a pack train in there in 17
days as opposed to the 29 days
taken last year over the old trail.
Owing to the cramped condition of the quarters now occupied by the government offices a
new building is to be built on
the government lot back of the
Hazelton hotel. The new building
will be only a temporary affair
costing $1,600, as it is not deemed advisable to spend more
money on a building until
permanent quarters can be secured. Harvey Crum has the

Indian Reserves of British Columbia
Dealing with the question of Indian
reserves, The Victoria Times of June
9, in defending the policy of the Federal
Government, of which it is one of the
mouthpieces, outlines more or less
clearly where the difficulty in the present situation lies and how it is proposed
to settle it.
Space will not permit republishing the
article neither will we assume to discus
the merits of the contentions of the
two governments, in connection with
the case. However in view of the existing friction between local natives and
the incoming settlers to this district, it
may interest the community at large to
reprint a part of the article that seems
to indicate what policy will likely be adhered to by those who will be entrusted
with the settlement of the local Indian
troubles arising out of the demands of
the Indians for further additions to their
already unduly large reserves. Hon.
Frank Oliver, minister of the Interior,
under whose administration Indian affairs directly come, speaking on the
question said in part:
"The question is one of very great
importance. It is of much greater importance in the province of British Columbia, that) in any of the other provinces, because though the area of that
province is very great, the amuont of
agricultural land is comparatively small,
and of that land, scattered all through
the province, the Indians hive taken
their pick, with the result that the development of the province is undoubtedly very seriously retarded. When the
reserves were set apart and subsequently in the negotiations between the province and the Dominion for the entrance
of the province into the Dominion, and
for the construction of the Canadian
Pacific railway, the question of the Indian reserves was dealt with, and the
conditions respecting the reserves in
British Columbia were made different
from those respecting reserves in other
parts of the Dominion. In other parts
of the Dominion the Indians have an
absolute right to the land, and when
the land is disposed of the proceeds accrue to the Indians. But in the province of British Columbia under the arrangement made between the province
and the Dominion, the ultimate right
in the land; the reversionary interest,
is in the province. This is the agreemcht
between the province and the Dominion.
While, when this arrangement was made,
it looked like a preservation of the interests of the province, and as being in
the interests of the people of that province, as it came tc be worked out it was
found that instead of being for the benefit of the province in securing its development, it has so far prevented the
alienation of Indian lands which are now
unused, because it is perfectly cleaa
that if the Indians are not going to get
the benefit of the lands which they are
not using, but which they might alienate, they are not going to alienate
them or permit them to be alienated,
and as a consequence the Indians all
over British Columbia have been sitting
tight and holding their thousand reserves in a thousand places in that
province.
Fig Strike on Ninemile Mountain.
A strike of the first importance
was made on Ninemile mountain*
when a thirty inch lead of solid
steel galena was uncovered on a*
claim located last fall by Hugh
Harris and Gus Rosenthal of
Hazelton. Until the last few
days snow had prevented any
work being done on the claim
but with the first opportunity
the owners began looking over
the surface and soon had uncov-'
ered an extremely fine showing.
There are now known to exist
five leads on this property and'
a large part of the claim is still
to be prospected. A tunnel will
be started on the new showing
and some shipments made thjs
summer.
